I just bought a bag of hay with little dried fruits and marigolds and such inside, to help with their foraging behavior. And I decided, “y’know, I’ll just pick out a few dehydrated carrots and give them to him!” So, I did, and my bun Poopy loved it, obviously. But now he’s been bolting after me around the room, and as soon as I lower my hand, he dives face first right into it. Or when I do my little whistle I do to get his attention, he runs at top speed to my hand. This was after one small session of treats! Like, three bits of carrot!

So, of course, I probably won’t be feeding him treats by hand again. But I was curious if most rabbits get that habit of associating hands with treats? Is it kinda a general rule not to do that, or do you have no problem with it?

My buns have learned when treats are gonna happen and when it isn’t food, just pets. But, they do rush over excitedly like they are going to get food sometimes and end up having to settle for attention. Mine associate me with food anyways since they think I am getting them pellets, or salad, etc if I move a step. Lol Certainly food motivated. There isn’t any downside to it that I have noticed, except when I do have a treat in my hand, they get so excited sometimes they will jump for it before I get to hand it to them and then I end up with nipped fingers.

I feed my bunnies treats by hand. I often feed all pellets by hand. I find it a good way to bond with my bunnies. They often stay for pets after having gotten a treat. The only downside as I see it is that they will sometimes run around my feet when I approach and I have almost tripped over them several times – but that happens with salad and pellets as well as with treats, come to think of it, they don’t get a lot of treats that aren’t part of their daily menu anyway – they beg for the healthy stuff just as hard, I think rabbits in general are very food oriented.

My bunny Yohio goes for my hand when he wants pets too. He sticks his head into my hand quite decisively and if he could talk, I’m sure he’d be saying Hey you, human, pet me, dammit.

How do you think I get Henry to KISS me??? Lol! When I discovered ‘craisins’ (thanks BBer’s!), Henry only gets offered one from my lips and at a height that he has to periscope and lean his cute little front paws on my knee to get it. He has never once nipped or bitten me. And his soft lips against mine – there is nothing else like it. That’s how I fell ‘in’ love with Henry – before neutering and craisins I didn’t much like him, LOL!

My hubby does all other treats – banana! and apple, and Henry runs to him regardless on ‘the chance’! Ha ha ha……
Gosh, if it wasn’t for treats I don’t think Henry would have anything to do with us???? DAM bunny!
