Hi there, I have been wanting to get two does for awhile but initially put it off as we wanted the time to do our research regarding diet/housing/vets etc and build them a suitable condo and bunnyproof. We initially pushed back the date to October but since doing our research a couple of issues have arisen.

        1) As we are getting the bunnies at 8 weeks, we are planning to vaccinate then spay as soon as possible (November)
        2) We will then be leaving to go away for 3 weeks in December ( as we are in Australia, the summer days can get up to 40degrees celcius) and are not sure about leaving our bunnies with people who have never cared for rabbits.
        3) I have read that some littermates whilst initially bonded can become aggressive towards each other, and is it a problem to spay two bunnies at the same time? We definitely don’t want this to be an issue if we have someone else looking after them

The long and short of it is.. Should I wait till we get back from the holiday before we get the bunnies? I was sorely disappointing when we had to push back the date the first time but want to do what is best for them.

You could get them now, but you would need to keep them separated while you were gone. The reason for this being you should wait at least one month after spaying before bonding, so if they are fixed in November, you are going to want to wait until December to start bonding. So you could begin bonding when you get back from your holiday. That way you wouldn’t have to worry about them being aggressive/fighting with each other while you are away.

Where are you vicshen ? I’m in Perth… Maybe I can direct you to some good boarding where they can also do bonding whilst you are away. Litter mates can become aggressive to each other when the hormones kick in so it would be a good idea to keep a close eye on them… I am in rescue and would suggest you look at getting a slightly older (6 months) bonded pair if you haven’t already selected buns from a breeder or similar.

I was gonna say wait till you get back, BUT if Roberta (isn’t she wonderful) can help you out, take advantage of her offer. Happiness all round!
              Cheers vicshen (another Aussie).

Hi everyone, I had some issues logging in but I’m happy to say we are the proud owners of 2 netherland dutch boys Django and Quentin. They are 9 months, bonded AND desexed. We also have a friend who is very good with bunnies coming to house sit for us so everything has worked out well! Now to sort out their litter training!!

So glad things worked out. I agree with Andi, not having to worry is a good thing. Two boys, bonded and neutered. What could be better? I’m a firm believer in boys. Mine absolutely adore each other.
