        Hello, all!

I was wondering if anyone had any definitive answer on wether or not it is safe for bunnies to drink from a pottery bowl. I am talking about one from a “paint-your-own” store where you decorate/paint it and then they “fire” it for you. I have searched these forums a little bit and no one seemed to be absolutely positive in the past. Does anyone have any new information concerning their safety? I am sick of my Giles kicking over his lightweight bowl and then trekking through the wetness, and I thought decorating my own would be more fun than a simple glass bowl. Thanks so much!

Easy, just make sure that the glaze you use is non toxic/foodware safe.. It should be clearly marked.
Old style glazes always contained lead and many still rely on base metals, most food safe glazes are purely glass. I was planning to make some more of my own but some bunny chewed the power cable on my potters wheel >:3

Don’t decorate it on the inside if it’s the kind of paint that only fires to like 150-200 degrees C (300-400 F). That type of paint comes off in the dishwasher so it’s not very durable.

If it is a paint that fires to like 1000 C and above (1800 and above F), it will unite with the glaze on the bowl and be stable. The bowl should preferably be porcelain or stone-ware, not earthenware. (Earhenware has pores and it cracks easily – not good for reasons of hygiene).

And get a somewhat heavy bowl if your bunny is the type of bunny who likes tossing his bowl around =) They tend to like that a lot and mopping the floor and refilling the bowl is not sth you want to do many times every day.

            Roberta, a potter’s wheel! I’m so envious!
