Since this isn’t really directly bunny-related not sure where to put it sub-forum wise.

My family just moved into a new house, the living room carpet is old and gross.    I shampooed it with one of those Rug Doctor things, it at least got out all the stains and a lot of the smell, but now the carpet just smells musty – and it’s driving me crazy.

Bunnies seem so hypersensitive to scents, I’d love to use that carpet powder you sprinkle down and vacuum up – but I think it would be too strong for them and I really want to encourage them to come into the living room and hang out with us!

        Suggestions for bunny-friendly, bunny-safe, all-natural carpet deodorizers?

Good old fashioned baking soda / Bi- Carb…. Sprinkle liberally, brush in with a stiff broom, leave for 24 hrs and vacuum.

That’s what someone at work suggested, Roberta! Is it hard to get it all out with the vacuum (it’s dark navy blue carpet)?  Also, is it hard on the vaccuum?

It’s not hard to get it out of the carpet and it’s not hard on the vacuum. Just vacuum BEFORE you put it down, to get all the bunny fur up, so it doesn’t clump the baking soda up in the tubes.

I like the baking soda idea.

If it smells musty, are you sure there isn’t mold in the padding or flooring under the carpet? If you rent, you might complain to the landlord; if you bought the house, you might consider lifting up the carpet and peaking underneath. If there’s mold, I would want it GONE!

If no mold is there, you could try blowing a fan on it overnight too to air it out.

JackRabbit, we have pulled up the carpet and thankfully no mold/mildew. It’s just old, and the previous owners I seriously think never, ever vacuumed the carpet in all the years they lived there. We did run a fan pointed at the carpet to help dry it after we shampooed it, but the scent lingers.

Hopefully the baking soda will work then. If not, you might check with carpet cleaning places about pet-safe odor removers like they use after smoke/fire damage.

I would say baking soda too. If you wanted to add some fragrance, you could sprinkle some ground up lavender or something on the carpet and then vacuum up. Might be expensive though. LOL
