I was just making dinner and thought it would be interesting to read how everyone here got they’re first pet.

Here’s how I got my first pet.

So when I was maybe 11 or 12, I was dying to have a pet of my own. Keep in mind that I was a little moody and grumpy back then I would literally drag  my mom on walks outside to look for people walking they’re dogs, and I would look for all the neighbors outdoor cats.

I was just sitting in my bedroom one day thinking of how I could get my parents to let me care for and get a pet. I finally thought of something.

I had a “diary” and I wrote that I couldn’t believe why my parents didn’t know why I was so grumpy. And that I wanted a pet of my own to care for and have. How I was always grumpy after taking care of the class pet and walking by the petstore and having never really been in there. I wrote some other stuff too but I don’t really remember what.

Then, I left my diary wide open on the floor right in front of my bedroom door. I knew my mom would be tempted to read some of it, and she would eventually tell my dad. I called her into my room while I was brushing my teeth or something in the bathroom, and when I heard her pick it up, I waited a few minutes then said never mind

The next day, I came home from school and sure enough, she had gotten me a pet frog. Not really what I expected (I thought my mom would get me a cat or hamster because she’s more into furry creatures).

So how’d you get your first pet?

What counts as a first pet? One that was a family pet or one that you called your own? My family had tons of pets. We had dogs before I was even old enough to remember. We had cats too. I remember where each of them came from. If you want to talk “my” pets, I think my first one was a goldfish. LOL

My very first, on my own, long time away from family, picked out and loved just by me pet was a cat called Frodo.. I had been in the army for 10 years after moving out of home and could not have pets in that time, after demobbing I moved to Melbourne and eventually had space to have a pet. Frodo was born to a stray cat under an old couch in the alley behind the local jeanery. They took in the cat and the kittens and were rehoming them. I got Frodo. Turned out his Dady was a Maine Coone, one of the first in Australia who lived locally and had managed to get out for a few days of debauchery. My Frodo was a very special boy.

Well, I remember going to the store to pick out my goldfish. I don’t remember the details leading up to it, other than that my brother had a pet betta fish and I wanted a fish too. We went to the fish store and the man asked me which one I wanted. I pointed out the pretty one with a fantail. He stuck the net in there and scooped him up. I named him Mickey and my mom liked him because he would willingly swim into the net when she was cleaning his fish bowl. He actually lived a long time for a goldfish, probably because he was a fancy one meant for a pond? Not sure.

I remember very clearly where “my” cat came from. We had two other cats, but they were my mom’s cats. There was a boy that lived with his dad next door to us. His parents were divorced and his mom lived a few miles away (not sure where exactly). He was visiting her and he found a kitten near her apartment. He brought him home because he wanted to keep him. His dad said no and told him to put the cat outside. So here was this poor kitten wandering around the neighborhood for weeks, not having any clue where he was. He walked up the driveway to our house one day in late November. I did not know at the time where the cat came from. I showed him to my mom and she told me to ask around to neighborhood. So I walked with my friend door to door. Everyone said they didn’t know who he belonged to. I went back home because it was starting to get dark. I asked my mom if he could come inside. She let out a big sigh and said OK. The next day, there was a huge snow storm. So he stayed at our house. My mom put an ad in the newspaper for a found cat. No one ever responded. Finally, my mom decided we could keep him since everyone was becoming attached to him. He was my cat because I was the one who brought him home and he was very attached to me. Does that count? LOL

My first pet that wasn’t more like my sibling(!) was actually the dog in my siggy, Mysti. She’s actually “our” dog, but the first where I’m a parent! (We had dogs while I was growing up, and turtles but I was too young to really care for them). We got Mysti back in 2001. I was 3 1/2 months pregnant and was in a car wreck. Two weeks later, I lost my baby. I knew I could never go through that pain again and decided not to have any more children. I still had that need to take care of a baby though so we got an adorable fuzzy black lab puppy.

My first “MY” pet was actually two — my Marlee and Moshi! My son and his girlfriend showed up at our house at midnight on a Saturday night last August with a baby bunny (Kieko). The girlfriend already had a bunny and her mother wouldn’t let her keep it. Hubby said later that our son brought it to our house saying “my mom loves bunnies — she won’t say no”. . . .and he was right. So we fell in love with Kieko. However, my son kept reminding me that Kieko was THEIR rabbit so I decided I’d get MY OWN bunny! I found the cutest little “girl” bun at a local breeder. When we went to pick “her” up, the breeder had made a mistake and “she” was a “he” (Moshi). The breeder brought his half sister along too in case we really wanted a girl. Well the little girl bun looked like an orangy brown powder puff and sat in a dog food bowl in the back of the breeder’s truck the whole time while Moshi hopped and binkied around. The little girl was so precious! About the time the breeder was ready to pack them both up and leave (I couldn’t decide which one, and the breeder even offered to let us take both home overnight to decide), hubby said “if you want them both, go ahead and get them both”. A microsecond later, both Moshi and sweet Marlee were headed to their new home!

My parents split up when I was 2, so I had pets at each house we always had pets with mum (where I lived), but I guess the first pet that I was really attached to was a cat called Hokey, who belonged to my Aunty but he came to stay with us while she was away and then just never left. He wasn’t really mine, but 10 years later I still have his ashes, so I think he should count

My first pets at Dad’s were two goldfish, but they were eaten by my second pet, a rescue kitten called Morris.

My first pet that is truly mine (as in I get to pay for the food and vets, and without living with parents as backup) is Harvey.

I have had pets all my life really. My family just always had animals in the house. But, the first one I got without the parents bringing them in is my bird.

I had been years without a pet because we were in pet free apartments and I really wanted an animal again. We looked around for small cage pets to try to talk the landlord into a pet if it was in a cage and there were two adorable guinea pigs, but he said no to “rodents”… so we asked if a bird was OK. He agreed to that. And so I looked into rescues, but the rescue wanted so many visits and a class and it was two hours each way by car so a minimum of four missed days of work, impossible. I finally found a breeder I liked (I am that annoying person that grills about weaning process, age of separation etc) and my boyfriend drove four straight hours to his house. The birds were nervous so wouldn’t step up, but this one little bird crawled up onto my shoulder and put his beak in my face. And he came home the four hours in the car and has been a spoiled brat that doesn’t even let me shower alone since.

                        Fun thread!

So I always wanted a pet, but my parents really aren’t animal people at all! So I was never allowed one. I remember one year I was about 10 or 11 and I cried and cried about it and I asked for a pet for my birthday. Birthday morning came and I unwrapped a little bowl, a water bottle, and found a hutch outside! I swear, I was SO happy, because I never thought they’d let me get a pet, I used to say it was the best day of my life, LOL!

Anyway we went to pick out Bumble, who was a really lovely little lop bunny. Sadly, I had a few bunnies over the years because between me being young and them living outside I never took very good care of them. :/

Years later, now 19, I went and got Loony! Best decision ever! Having a bunny inside is so different to outside, and she feels so much more like part of the family. In some ways she feels much more like a proper pet. Obviously now we have Teddy too. So here we are!

Tessie — your parents really aren’t animal people, and now you’ve moved back home with two huge soon-to-be-famous bunnies. Bet your parents just love you!

The first pet I ever knew was our family dog named Lily. She followed home my sister and mom from school when she was a puppy. She was a poor, lonely stray puppy who nobody would claim as theirs, so we took her in. I was a baby, a year about I think, so I grew up with her, and when she died it shattered my world. Everything came at once, she had a tumor, and then she came down with an ear infection, and had a bad stroke. Finally the vet said that there was no use letting her suffer any longer.
My first dog that I got, All my own, was a mini dachshund puppy named snickers. She turns 3 on august 31, and I always get her new toys and have even baked her a huge bacon cake for her birthday. 2 years later I got my bun Moxie, she turns 1 on august 7.
Those are my stories for first pet and my pets.

My first pet was a rabbit I named Blossom. She was all white, and I was maybe 4 or 5. Looking back, I think my parents were nuts to give a young child they clearly could not care for all on their own, but it started my lifelong love for rabbits. With my own family, we talk about how pets are part of our family, with their own feelings and needs, and how they do not just belong to one family member.

Growing up on a farm I was always surrounded by animals. Both my parents were vets so they were always bringing home sick or homeless animals. That is actually how I got my first bunny, Periwinkle! But that is a whole other story!

Because I was the youngest child I never had my own pet, I kind of just shared my older siblings pets. But that all changed when I was 10! One day, my dad told me he had found a wild kitten in a shed down the farm. The kitten seemed to be alone and he said that if I managed to catch it, I could keep it. I tried and tried, but this kitten was way too smart for me! She knew all the secret, little spots to hide in. I spent weeks trying to get this kitten to come out of hiding with no luck. A few weeks later, I was lying on the couch and I suddenly felt something soft and warm on the side of my face. My dad had finally managed to catch the kitten! And boy was she wild! I immediately set to work trying to tame her. I spent hours on end in my parents bedroom with her. I named her Buffy the Human slayer (instead of Vampire slayer) because of all the cuts and scratches I had from her. Her name seemed like a cool idea when I was 10 – not so much now!

I eventually managed to tame her and 13 years later, she is still going strong!

My dad is a big animal person. So growing up we had all sorts of fish/aquatic frogs. My first pet was sort of the family cat. She was, however, attached to me and my dad the most. She was incorporated into the family when she stumbled into the yard. For the most part all my pets have been strays. I like to rescue animals. =]

This was a really cute thread idea. =]

My first pet was a hamster that I got from Santa when I was probably 13 or 14 (don’t really remember). My next pet came when I was 18 or 19 but still iving at home and was a Beagle mix that a coworker was talking about taking to the HS because her kids were all in high school and never home to care for it any more. When I was like 9 or 10 my parents got us kids a tiny little silky terrier when we moved into our house. He got hit by a car when he was just a few years old and we had to put him to sleep. After that my dad said no more dogs and he hates cats. I told my sister I was going to convince him to let me have this dog. She said no way was he ever going to say yes. LOL Two days later I had a new dog. I have had dogs and a few cats (after I moved out) ever since.

My first pet.   Someone dumped some puppies and their mother at our house.   Parents had them picked up by humane society.  I cried n wanted a dog.

Parents gave in and one day Dad came home with a beagle collie mix.  Named him Buster.  That was a wonderful surprise

I remember a cat before that that died under my brothers window.  His name was Menew.  I only saw him in 1 picture I was too young to remember much about him.  Mom said he died in the alley not under my brothers bedroom window.   In the picture I was petting Buster my dog and Menew was laying around in the yard.   I am not even sure he was really our cat.

So  Buster was  my first pet.

Later on I did get rabbits hurrah.

My very first pet is the lovely Merlin, and i think that’s why I’m so attached and such an anxious mother on here.

The story is not a very fun one, but explains why that little fuzzy butthead means the world to me. I suffer from manic depression and catatonia, and often when feeling unhappy i would just go to bed and sleep all day, not eating or anything. I also used to live in a house with housemates, but had a room to myself, so when i got in from work at around 4 am it’d be an empty room. Very sad!

My boyfriend decided one day that i needed someone to look after, and suggested we get Merlin. I just had to buy the supplies, cage, bedding, etc and he’d buy me any bunny i wanted. I wanted to get a rabbit that hadn’t had an easy life either, so I went to an adoption agency and asked about the rabbit who’d been there the longest and it was Merlin – little loppy, grumpy, scar- eared Merlin. It was love at first nose wiffle. He bounded straight up to me and climbed on my boots.

The difference he has made in my life is incredible. Even when having a bad day, I cant stay in bed like I normally would because theres someone relying on me to get up and look after them. And when I got home from work, he was always there demanding a stroke before he went back to sleep.

Hes grumpy and he likes to pee on my boyfriend, but I love Merlin so much. He’s saved my happiness.

My first pet was a black hooded rat named Billy. My mother isn’t an animal lover at all. I was not allowed to have pets inside when I was younger. When she and my dad split my dad (a huge animal lover) said I could have one small pet if I saved the money myself to get all of the initial supplies. I was 7 years old and would go around to neighbors and ask if I could help them with anything. Some would give me a dollar but most would give me a quarter or fifty cents. It took months of saving before I got to go to the pet store.

I was going to get a bird at first. It was the only pet my mother allowed inside and I grew up with birds. But then I saw the rats and stuck my hand down into the tank. Billy was the only one that didn’t scurry away or try to bite me. He was awesome and I even snuck him to school once or twice. Lol.

My next pet actually came from my mother for my 11th birthday. It was my first dog a Shar-pei mix named Precious.

My first pet was my cat, Lilly. I begged and pleaded for a kitten, so one day my Dad told me to shut my eyes, and all of a sudden there she was in my lap! She is still a happy (and slightly overweight ) cat We also got our family dog, a Border Collie named Mollie three years ago, as a surprise for my little brother after our previous dog died of cancer.

My family had always had a cat when I was growing up, but my first personal pet was a beta fish. My cousins were going to buy my older brother a fish for Christmas (Bad idea, I know!) but I guess my mom figured I would want one too? (I don’t exactly remember because I was only 6) So we both ended up with fish.
The next pet was a guinea pig, a gift(AAAGH!) for my thirteenth birthday. I guess I have gotten rather attached to piggies since then, in the fifteen years since then I have never been without a pair.
