        Hey, guys.

I let my granddad go buy rabbit food without me; he returned with the kind of pellet food that includes that strangely-multicolored “kibble”, as well as seeds. Seeds. ???????????

TL;DR: It’s about 12 AM and my rabbits are used to being fed hard food at night. I don’t want to feed them the new pellet food because I’m not sure if it would be too quick of a diet change, but I’m also not sure whether to skip hard food altogether and feed them hay until we get good food (which could be a few days). Should I go ahead and give it to them or just keep them on hay and veggies?

In case my granddad insists that we use this hard food (so as not to waste money), how should I wean them on/off this stuff?

Can you return the bag of food and buy the normal stuff? I wouldn’t feed this stuff.

I agree with Beka27. I’m guessing your grandad picked up whatever was cheapest because he didn’t know any better. Just explain to him that feeding that food is like feeding a child candy and chips for breakfast plus seeds are bad for bunnies!

Don’t feed it at all. They’ll be fine with hay water and veggies until you can get your (normal?) pellet back.

FWIW, my vet says bunnies can go without pellets but not without hay. I wouldn’t give my buns this food. I had a small crisis recently where I underestimated my buns needs and their food delivery was two days late. I gave them a tablespoon of the remaining pellets (they usually get 1/3c) each day along with extra veggies and plenty of hay. They came through no problem–perfect normal poops, perfect normal activity levels. I would try to return the bag for my regular brand, when I have the chance.

I’ve done that in the past as well when i was running low on pellets and waiting for a shipment. Gave slightly fewer pellets to stretch what i had…

In the future, i would recommend that you keep a backup bag. When sealed, they have a good shelf life. When you open the last bag, try to replace it soon and put it away.
