Hi! I just created a profile so I could post about this and hopefully get some answers. I got two rabbits a month ago. One is a lionhead. She was very matted when I got her. She has since had all the mats cut out/brushed out but still has a lot of dandruff as well as fur loss behind the neck and on her rear end. I took her to two vets; both took skin scrapings and looked under a microscope for fur mites but told me she is clean.

Since fur mites have been ruled out, what can I do to relieve her dandruff? Would it be alright to spot treat with diluted tea tree oil? Aloe vera? Brush her out with chinchilla dust? Also, the vets said not to worry about her hair loss, but she looks awful. Is this normal for a lionhead?

Thanks for any help you can give! I’m a first time bunny-owner and I’m trying my best to take care of this little girl.

Skin scraping aren’t always 100% accurate, so there is still a possibility she may have something, although it’s unlikely. You can treat with a few doses of revolution just to be sure.
I have lionheads and I can tell you this isn’t normal. Do be careful, essential oils, tea tree oil, and aloe Vera are highly debated things for use on bunnies. Anything you want to use I would ask the vet first.
