All was fine last night, munching on hay. This morning he wouldn’t eat and was in distress. Rushed him in to the vet and he’s been hospitalized. The vet thinks he has an obstruction. He’s getting pain control and fluids , xrays and bloodwork but his prognosis is poor. Please send him some vibes.

Thank you everyone for your vibes!!
I’m sorry I tried to post last night, not sure if it was my phone or what but I couldn’t. Your vibes must have worked because our initial prognosis was really poor.

Rupert was fine the evening before, plowing down hay when I went to bed. When I got up in the morning and went to feed, he was laying in the wrong spot. I knew something was up, so I picked him up and he didn’t dig into me like he always does (sort of a ‘don’t drop me mom’ thing) -tried treats, no uptake; my last check was putting him out for a run on the floor and of course he just laid down. So I knew it was serious.

My vet is now a home vet, so I rushed Rupert (and Kahlua for support) to my mom’s house (we live out of town so we normally see my vet at mom’s) but my vet wasn’t able to see him that morning (she was the other side of town); so she referred me to a couple of clinics one which was able to get him in right away.

While on the phone, Rupert, while still laying down, peed and cried out.
When we got to the vet, he was really hypothermic (36) and dopey and shivery and tooth grinding.

They did x-rays but they were inconclusive (lots of expensive x-rays all day which were inconclusive…) ; she felt from the palpitation and x-rays that he had an obstruction but couldn’t be sure.
The treatment worked well and he was perky, pooping but not eating when I sprung him at 8pm. We spent the night at my parents house so he could stay the day and be watched by them; He was shivery last night (so he was using a hot water bottle) and we were force feeding.

This morning, he was eating, drinking and biting me while I was trying to do his meds. He has turned full circle!

He needs to go for a dental-I’m sure it was a combination of his teeth needing to be done and that he’s always had a sensitive tummy. What a scare, what a vet bill; what a disgruntled but eating and pooping bunny I have!

Glad to hear he’s doing well now! Scary! Bindi had a bad case of gas the other weekend and I know it was because he needs his teeth done. That’s usually one of the first symptoms that he needs them done.

Hope he stays healthy until you can get his dental done! And we need pics of Rupert. It’s been way too long.

Only just finding this. I’m relieved to read he improved after treatment. He went on some pain meds?

Nothing worse then inconclusive X-rays and the likes. On one hand it’s great nothing dire is showing up but not so great when still left without answers.

I vaguely remember a vet telling me X-rays (and maybe ultrasound too??) of kidneys are difficult to get. According to her… Were they able get good view of his kidneys and bladder at all?

                                                    Poor Rupert (((cuddles))).

                                                        Thanks everyone!!

Yup LPT this is my ‘oh uh better see the dentist’
On the plus side I’m all set up to take care of stasis at home (without the 1-1/2 hour round trip car ride) -I’m going to see if my vet will get me extra supplies that I can just hoard. He’s always had a sensitive tummy, and as he gets older I imagine we’ll have more trips.

Jersey-the vet honestly didn’t want to talk to me; at the clinic we had to go to they like to have the techs do everything and the vet writes notes which a clerk reads to you. I got a debrief from her in the afternoon only because I basically said I’d sit there and wait (they told me she was busy and then going home-like really? Without talking to me at all?) -it was a very brief meeting; she said the x-rays were inconclusive but his bloodwork was really good. So I’m guessing kidneys are ok. She did say his white blood cells were funny so we’re on antibiotics too. The full regime is critical care (don’t need now) sub-q (don’t need now) antibiotics (2 weeks of bright red goo all over me) gut motility (that I’ve never heard of -one week) and metacam (one week, but I’m considering dropping it)

Mimz-frazzle is a good term for me! She suspected a mass based on palpatations but the x-rays didn’t confirm. I imagine he got gas from poorly chewed food (I’m now cutting up his veggies!), stopped eating, dehydrated, everything got worse, and whatever was in his tummy acted as a blockage; but once he hydrated it wasn’t really a blockage. I’m guessing based on how it went and that I’ve heard that often happens. He definitely has nothing he could get into out of the ordinary-willow, cardboard, hay and food!

Super duper awesome poops today. And he landed quite a few bites during meds, so he’s doing well!

Jers-I will see If I can get a picture uploaded, I took one at the hospital yesterday

Good for you on the sit and wait! Really busy and then going home? I’d even wait in the parking lot if needed!

                                                              PICTURES!!!

I was looking at your pics and thinking aw, somebunny doesn’t feel good. Then, out pop the ears! I love big bunny ears!

I know what you mean about the vet. It is nice to know you have a “pinch” vet. I use two different vets (they don’t know that – one is for easy stuff like nail trims when I’m too nervous, etc., and the other is for scary stuff), and scoped out a 24 hour vet hospital this weekend — drove to their offices so I’d know exactly where they are if I ever have to go their in the dark when I’m in a panick!

Thanks everyone! He’s doing wonderful and I see my vet today to stock up for any future episodes.

I phone the dental specialist today and left a message with reception that I wanted to try to get him in for a dental. I just got a random follow up from his procedure last year, same clinic, unrelated to my call; telling me he’s due for a check up lol So I said fantastic, he does need levelling and when could I get in. In two weeks he’s booked and it works perfect because I’m already off work that day! We had to wait a month or more last time, how lucky am I that I don’t even have to take extra time off work and we really don’t have to wait long! Woot!! I’m thrilled

I notice Rupert has a wee bootie on one foot in those pictures…those are the same ones Jenna wears for her walks!

His bootie is where the IV line went in -they unhooked him for my visit I guess!
Kahlua is doing good-You can certainly see she did have head tilt as she ended up oriented a bit downwards and her gait is a bit funny, but boy is she doing well. She’s actually up 0.02kg from before she was ill (she got really thin while ill so this is wonderful)-and attitudey as ever lol After the vet, we went to mom’s house for the night so we’d be close for his re-check (I live about 40 minutes out of town) and she got out of the crate, looked around, went back in the crate (like ‘take me home!’) and started digging the blanket furiously lol
