So I rarely see Cookie poop outside his litter box. But when it comes to his peeing, he will pee anywhere that he rests whether the flooring is absorbent or not. I didn’t mind the constant accidents before because if it was on hard flooring I would easily wipe it up and if it was on a blanket it would get washed right away since I would do laundry regularly. However, it is getting really hard to have to do Cookie’s laundry on such a regular basis. Especially since my schedule will become extremely busy next year. Cookie lives in our garage at the moment and is content where he lives. Later on however, my mom promised that Cookie will eventually move into the house. Might mean soon or might mean three years. Who knows? But anyway, in order to have any hope of Cookie moving in the house he has to at least do all the peeing in his litter box. So any suggestions on getting Cookie to pee in his litter box?! Is it possible?! I don’t mind accidents every once in a while.

What is his litterbox situation? Is it big enough to lie down in? What litter do you use?

Does he usually just pee in one specific spot or just random spots?

It is a decent size litter box. It has enough space for him to lie down in. I use carfresh natural litter and put tons of his hay on top of it. He pees in the right hand area of the box, mostly the two corners. Here are some pictures of his litter box

I don’t see how it is possible for him to dislike his litter box.

Do you clean it too well? I had a rabbit that got pretty ticked off when I’d really wash his litter box, so i always had to keep a scoop of old, stinky stuff and put it back in the litter box after cleaning. Otherwise, it was weeks to get him re-trained to the box. You can sprinkle some fresh stuff over the stinky stuff so it doesn’t seem so awful.

Is the bolded literal?  If you mean he pees all the time every time he isn’t active where ever he is, that sounds like incontinence and is a medical issue.

For the rest of this post, I’m going to assume you didn’t mean it literally, especially since that’s not the impression I got from your second post mentioning corners.

Litter training is easiest when you meet your bunny halfway.  When we first brought Porky home, he didn’t pee in his litter box, he peed on the third floor of his condo.  We moved his litter box to the third floor of his condo and he’s been perfect at home ever since.

The next thing is smell.  Just wiping up accidents isn’t enough.  You need to eliminate the pee smell from the spot you don’t want him to pee on, and move it to the spot where you do want him to pee.  Wipe up the pee with something that won’t hurt your bunny and has no scent of it’s own, like a paper towel.  Place the pee soaked item in the litter box, this moves the pee smell into the litter box where you need it.  Clean the spot on the floor with vinegar to eliminate the smell from where you don’t want it.

I wonder if the odor controlling aspect of carefresh litter is actually putting your bunny off.  If it doesn’y smell at least a little like pee,it won’t smell like where he should go.  I know many bunnies do fine with carefresh, so it must not completely obliterate the smell for them.  Remember, bunnies can smell fainter odors than we can.  However, sinceyou are having a problem, maybe a litter without odor control would be better till he get’s the hang of it.

I could clean the litter box more often. I have always noticed that Cookie enjoys using his litter box more when it is clean. No, I think I bolded that part on accident. Anywhere that Cookie makes his resting spot he will eventually pee on it. I will make sure that I eliminate any pee smell anywhere outside his litter box. Hmmm.. and maybe I can change the litter he is using at the moment. But even when I smell the litter box I can smell a faint pee smell. So I don’t think that is the problem. I wonder if he is peeing on these particular places because he decided he liked them and is marking them as his…

It does sound more territorial and like he’s marking those spots. How frustrating! If he has a few specific places that he likes to rest (and pee!) maybe you could try putting some litterboxes by those places or in those places for a bit? They might not always have to stay there, but maybe it will help him to go in the box vs. somewhere that you have to clean it up?

I think it’s also true that rabbits will “go” where they want to have litterboxes. Our new bunny continually peed in one spot of her condo, so we put a litterbox there for her. It seems like that’s where she wanted her box to be (we were resistant bc it’s along the side next to our 1st bun’s condo, but she seems happy and he doesn’t care!).

I don’t think the litter is the problem. I’ve used Carefresh Natural with all of mine. Two of mine figured out where to pee right away, but one of my girls took a little longer! Every time I found pee outside the litterbox, I wiped it up with a paper towel and put the wet paper towel in the litterbox. She was always right there checking out what I was doing, so I showed her the paper towel, put it in the litterbox, and at the same time had the “pee pee goes in the litterbox” talk (she sat there as if she was listening so intently, it was so cute!). I also cleaned the spot with white vinegar/water. Have to admit, I change out the litter daily but the litterbox itself doesn’t get vinegar/water wipe down except every 2 weeks or so. I think it took her 2 or 3 days, but she hasn’t peed anywhere but the litterbox since.

thanks for the replies. Today I am going to find something that I could use as a litter box and will put it next to this one spot that Cookie pees on most frequently. I will put some hay in it so he would understand it is a litter box. LoL, JackRabbit. She sounds so sweet. I think I will also remove the blankets in his hideaways (where he pees). I think since the floor is vinyl if he pees it would be uncomfortable for him. That way he will understand that the floor is not a litter box. Also that way I can wipe it up with a paper towel and put it in his litter-box. Usually, when he peed in his hideaways, the blankets would absorb his pee and it wouldn’t be washed till a few days from then. The smell would remain there. I want to eventually put blankets back into his hideaways though. I will let u all know how things go.

                          thanks all

Cookie has become really good with the peeing now. However, he did pee twice out of the litter box in these past two days. Once was on his hideout and the other was on a random sleeping spot on vinyl. I removed any trace of the pee with my vinegar spray as soon as I found the pee. So for now I thing the litter training is coming in hand. Except I do have one concern. I want to eventually put his blankets and towels back in his pen. But I am afraid he will pee on them since they are absorbent. So what should I do?
