Hi! I visited my local animal control to see if there were any animals the needed help and also document some things about the animals. I walked into the small animal room and there where only 2 animals. A lizard and a 1 year old Holland Lop named Rain. She had a sign the was huge saying, COCCIDA : CANNOT BE WITH OTHER ANIMALS. This little girl is going to be put down soon due to being in a kill shelter.I looked in its cage for diarrhea and there was only 5 poop that was strung together. They looked dry too. I was thinking of fostering this little girl and try to cure the coccida an possibly bond my rabbit with Rain. Is there any way to cure it?

Oh yeah, it’s easy to cure. There is a sulfate drug (cannot remember the name right off my head) but talk to your vet about it. Did this shelter due a fecal test? Is that how they discovered it?

I’ve treated many rabbits successfully who have this.

Both of my lops had coccidia when I got them. Got meds from the vet. No problem.

Definitely. Its a common illness (especially in younger bunnies) and can be treated with some meds from the vet. It would be wonderful if you could save this girl!

One of my past rabbits, that we found on the street, had coccidia. It was easily treated with Albon tablets that were crushed and put in her water.

Albon! That’s it! Ours was in liquid form.

Yep, Albon, that is the drug I was trying to think of!

Yup. Get the liquid so you can give the whole dose at one time.
Toby, how is it living in S.C.? My hubby is looking for work and there is a chance we could have to move to Charleston and we’re kinda scared of such a big change

@Megabunny – I live in upstate SC (not too far from the NC mountains) which is across the state from Charleston. I think that SC is a pretty nice place to live. I have visited Charleston a few times and it is a nice place to visit. I don’t know how it would be to live there full time. SC would be a fairly big change from NY. There is (was?) a chapter of the HRS in Charleston, and the website is still there, but the site has remained mostly unchanged for years. I know that the person who ran that chapter had health problems, which is why they stopped taking in rabbits three or four years ago. It’s possible that the chapter is still active, so that might be a good place to find some rabbit friends and get vet recommendations. If you do move, I hope that you enjoy it here!

@cottontaillover, inquire about Baycox (toltrazuril) also. Another effective med for coccidia. I hope you’re able to help her. Good luck!

I hope you can make it work with this bunny! Coccidia can be fatal if left untreated, so inquire as to how they discovered he has it (did they do a fecal test?) and what, if anything, they have given him to treat it.

                              E. Cunniculi isn’t really treatable, you just manage the symptoms, and this can be passed between animals, so are you sure it said he had Coccidia, or could it have been EC?
