Mosley has been getting mats literally overnight. They are very bad, and are incredibly close to the skin. Last time I brought her in to get spayed, the vet said it looks like she is not a good self cleaner. She HATES being brushed because it pulls her skin even when I try and hold the mat. I try and brush her at least once a week. I don’t know what kind of brush you guys use for long haired rabbits to prevent this matting but I need help because I’m tempted to just shave her..her whole body is just ridiculous! Every time I get one mat out, the next morning there is another! I feel so bad for my poor little girl

Any suggestions as to what’s going on? Brushes to use? How to help ease the brushing experience? I think she is molting because she is losing fur like crazy, and it gets all over!

If the mats are bad, sometimes the best thing to do is just “start over”. Have her shaved and then maintain the fur as it grows out.

Does she shed all at once or more continuously? Wooly sheds all at once and I can always tell because the loose fur will literally slide down. During that time, I have to groom him regularly to keep the fur from matting. When he isn’t having a heavy shed, then once a week is sufficient.

To groom, I use a hairbuster comb. It has widely set teeth and a rubber piece that grabs the hair. I start in the back, lifting his fluff up and combing underneath first. Then I work my way outward and toward his front. When working tangled fur, start at the tips and slowly work inward.

My Piglet is always getting matted.. I have to book him in for another shave… Becuase Pepper and the girls dote on him and are constantly grooming and snuggling him his fluffy angora coat get so knotted… It doesn’t help when I try to brush him and Pepper gets jealous and tries to kill the slicker brush… Pepper is very protective of her husbun.

We had to have our Jersey Wooly partly shaved this year. We found him stray – he was SO matted. It was horrible. he does still nip a tad with brushing – but is at least letting my husband get to him. Lots of people recently recommended this hairbuster brush. I am waiting for it to come in the mail now!

Thanks for all the advice..I just ordered the ‘Hairbuster’ comb..hopefully that works with her long fur! I read some reviews that it doesn’t work with long fur..but I guess we will give it a shot! I’m desperate at this point. PS- Mosley seems to shed CONTINUOUSLY. It’s like never ending with her.

I shaved her last night…such a sad sight to see all those pretty locks go away.  buuut I kept telling her that she is such a pretty girl and gave her a big apple treat and she seems to be happy  I am going to start brushing her daily I think just because clearly once a week wasn’t enough.

WOW you found your Jersey stray?? I wanna hear about that story!!

What is it about stray Jerseys? I found one at a shelter that was a mess of bald spots because he’d been found as a stray and was all matted. It was love at first sight. Sadly, they sent him to get neutered and he died. I was so stunned!

That’s so sad, I didn’t even know that people would just “let” there bunny go outside…how cruel. Where do you find these strays? Just hopping around the backyard or what?

The hairbuster comb does not “work” on long fur if you just stick it into the wool and try to run it through. You have to work your way in using short strokes.

start your pluching around the base of the butt, tail, and behind the hind legs. that is where the most fur will release. when you find mats that are unpluckablem, you have to pick them apart into separate strands. you can actually hear them crackle as they are separating. once you have them separated thing enough, the majority of the hair (already out but just matted with the new hair) will come right out. after that those are clear then you can go in with the hairbuster. you will have some balding spots but the bun will feel a whole lot better. bunny beards are the real beotch. its almost entirely a pick and pluck job

Hmm, sounds like it’s a good thing Wooly isn’t a lionhead. He would not like having a beard and a beard being groomed. LOL

Gonna follow this thread. Ox hates being brushed and is such a pain about it so I’m always looking for tips. Mike, come over here and help me out! I’ll pay you in baked goods.

Does anyone have any tips on how to get under the chin?
