Hi everyone! I just want some opinions and experience stories with people traveling with their rabbits. In a couples months I plan on taking a weekend trip about 4 hours away. I know I can leave Flash with a family member, or ask her to come here while we are away. But in the event that I cannot arrange pet sitting services would it be ok to bring her? I have a small animal carrier we use to bring her to the vet.

I don’t think that is too far and yes, it would be fine.

You should be fine. I’ve done 6.5 hour drives with mine when moving and fairly regularly do 2.5 hour drives with them to the beach when I don’t have a sitter or my family wants to see them. My two are not happy being in the car and get a bit anxious, but they’re totally fine. Once they’re to their destination, it’s like it never happened. In fact, mine get most worried if I leave them in the car alone like when I stop to use the restroom. I think they think I’ve left them forever.

Just make sure you put hay in the carrier with them. I also attach their water bottle to the front of the carrier. Tip: To make life easier, I put puppy pee pads in the bottom of the carrier for them to use and then change the soiled ones when I take a driving break. It makes it much less of a hassle. In fact if mine pee on the pads, they then push the pad into the corner to get it out of the way. They’re funny like that.

Excellent tips! We’ve been thinking about doing this, but haven’t yet. Once you arrive at your destination, what do you house them in? I’m trying to figure out if a travel carrier + x-pen would work in someone else’s house who has a crated dog, or if they would be okay for a few days in a small cage or large carrier.

Personally, I put them in an x-pen upon arrival. I always bring their litterbox from their cage at home, so there’s immediately something familiar. The first thing they do is go in it and go, “We know this! It’s ours!”. I feel like it gives them a semblance to home and safety in a new place.

Admittedly, I don’t have experience having mine somewhere with a dog, so I’ll let someone else speak to that.

And you haven’t had any problems with stray pee? Given how much Sweetie refused to let us move his litter box just a few feet I’m not sure how he would react to it in a whole different place. I’m fine with cleaning it up on my own floor, but I’m not sure I’d feel okay about it at someone else’s house. A pad might work, if he doesn’t just dig it up. Hmm. I think for this weekend we’ll just leave him with a sitter. But it is encouraging to hear your success stories in case we are unable to find a bunny sitter at a later date.
