        Hi everyone,

Rowan is booked into be neutered this coming Tuesday. Rowan came to me as stray two weeks ago and no one has claimed him so I made the decision to take him the vet get him vaccinated, microchipped and a general check up before welcoming him into my furry family.I have a few questions about what I should to before and after the neuter.

        1. What should I do to prepare him the morning of the neuter?

        2. What should I do when I first bring him home after the neuter?

        3. Is there any food or activates i should avoid before and after the neuter?

        4. When he goes into the vet clinic should I bring some of his pellets, hay and a fleece blanket for him?

        Many thanks,

        Royal Rabbits

(Side note Ralph and Rosie came to me neutered and spayed)

          1. Morning of the neuter. Feed him.
          2. When bring him home. Make sure he has plenty of hay, fresh water, and you can feed him!
          3. Activities after neuter. The vet may tell you to limit climbing and jumping for a few days after a neuter (7 to 10 days after a spay). He may be a bit lethargic because of the anesthesia and pain meds the first day. Having hay, water, salad (whatever he’s used to), and pellets that he’s used to available/offered will help keep his gi tract moving. His poops may be smaller at first (the is normal after anesthesia).
          4. I took all three. The vets that spayed/neutered my three had me bring two meals worth of pellets (one extra) and hay so they could offer them food once they were awake. The vets also had me bring their water bottles so they would be able to drink out of something familiar. The fleece was to comfort them with the smell of home. All three of mine did great.

          Good vibes for neuter day!

I always pack the carrier with paper on the bottom, a baby blanket for softness and a good helping of hay… Mine also get snack packs to take to the vet with the favourite salads and pellets. I make sure I have a 1 or 2 ml oral syringe on hand in case they need help drinking (Only had to do it once in 6 Spays and 5 Neuters) some pure banana baby food in a small pouch just in case. Have their cage nice and clean and set up so they cannot climb or jump for a few days. Boys are generally OK by the third morning. If they are not indoor rabbits I would move them indoors for the recovery period.

Aw Roberta, snack packs and baby food. That’s so cool! Such a good bunny mommy!

I feel bad now. All I sent was baggies of plain pellets and some hay. Glad my buns didn’t run into your buns at the vet and compare lunchboxes!

You feel bad JR??? When I took Henry for his neuter, I took a small container of CRAP bunny food (how and when I first found out I was feeding my bunny ‘crap’). And I felt even worse when I collected him the next day and he was eating someone’s salad (staff’s lunch) – DOH!
And lets be honest – Roberta is just ‘bunny’ wonderful! There was a time when ‘no way in hec’ would I let Roberta see Henry’s lunchbox! But she can look in it anytime now (and check him for mites & fleas – thanks Roberta!)…. LOL!

Nothing for me to add for Rowan’s procedure, JR and Roberta covered it perfectly!  Wishing you both (your included cause your the worried bunny parent!) the very best. Cheers.

                  I think everything was covered!

Boys do generally bounce back very quick, so try not to fuss too much over him. Just let him rest afterwards.

In case of an emergency after, ask the vet for info on what to do/who to contact after “business hours”. Is there a particular ER vet that your vet works with, or is there a number you can call to contact your vet directly?

Only things I like to add: If he has a water-bottle, give him water in a bowl too when he comes home, if he feels under the weather he might not care to bother with drinking from a bottle.

And if it’s cold where you live, you can give him a hot water-bottle to snuggle up to, but see to it that he has enough space so he can move away from the heat if he wants to. But rabbits can become cold after anaesthesia and that can be dangerous so they may need extra heat.

I’ve had two boys neutered, one was sluggish when he came home and I had to syringe-feed him pellet sludge the next day. My other boy started eating the minute he came home and showed no sign of having been put under.
