Since my bunbun is past his 8 weeks, I decided that Alfalfa hay was too rich in calcium for him so I decided to switch into Timothy Hay, however, he seems to not like the taste or something of the hay! He was eating Alfalfa hay just yesterday and he loved it for the time that he had it. But I cannot get him to eat Timothy Hay. IS there anything I can do to encourage him to eat it or something? [Ps. I ran out of Alfalfa hay too so sadly I can’t mix them ]

Can you pick up some more Alfalfa hay and mix them? I would also try different hay varieties if that doesn’t work. Orchard Hay is usually a bunny favorite.

I think alfalfa may be sweeter. Any chance you could get a small bag of alfalfa hay to mix and transition? He will eventually eat grass hays but in the mean time you definitely want him to eat hay, period. If you can’t get alfalfa to mix/transition, you might try orchard grass hay.

Timothy hay is not even remotely as yummy as alfalfa (if you’re a bunny , so in order to get him to eat it, he either needs to be VERY hungry or you need to get some alfalfa and mix it with so the transition becomes gradual. Alfalfa is rich and bunnies have an instinct to go for rich foods because in their natural environment, rich food is often very scarse and they most often only have time to grab what little  they can before they notice sth that scares them away, prey-animals as they are.

I think 2 months is too young to wean him off alfalfa, but I’m not an expert. Young bunnies need calcium and protein to grow properly. I think you can wait to switch him over to just timothy a couple of months more. Others may disagree with me on this. The timothy you’ve already got will keep until he’s ready for it if you store it in a dry place out of direct sunlight.

Yeah I’ll just have to go buy him some more alfalfa and mix it. Thanks!
