Just three days ago I had 2 bunnies, now I have none

A few days ago me and my husband decided it would be best for our two bunnies if we surrendered them back to the petstore. Financially we could not afford them anymore, they weren’t getting enough time out of their pen because we both work 12 hour shifts everyday and they weren’t getting the attention they deserve anymore.

That same day, I started to notice that my Bunny Moomoo wasn’t moving. I sat with him for a bit, and petted him with him on my lap. He usually hates sitting on my lap and walks off right when I put him down, and this time he didn’t seem to mind, which I thought was weird. Another weird thing was that Moomoo hates my husband, and usually when he sees my husband he stomps at him and runs away, that day Moomoo didn’t stomp at him at all. Just earlier that day  Moomoo stomped at him about 6 times within three hours cause my husband walked by him more than usual. I figured Moomoo was probably stressed about my husband . I then started to notice that Moomoo wasn’t eating. When I noticed this it was around 8 pm and the only bunny vet was closed, so I decided to wait for the morning and my husband would take him. At 5am I had to go to work and I noticed Moomoo still hadn’t moved or ate, but I couldn’t stay with him, I had to go to work. My husband got up a few hours later but it was too late, moomoo was found dead.

My husband then buried Moomoo and when he got back, I guess he projected his feelings on Booboo and thought Booboo looked really sad. I guess he thought it would be a good time to surrender Booboo now, and that maybe he would be happier at the petstore.

I feel like I failed both of them. After I did some research, im quite sure that Moomoo died from GI Stasis. I always leave unlimited Timothy hay for them, but my problem was I also left unlimited pellets, so they always chose the pellets over the hay. The bunnies had a large hallway that was basically their house, which is around 3 feet by 12 feet. I hadn’t let them out much for the past two days so he hadn’t gotten enough exercise. Moomoo died, and then Booboo was basically abandoned after he lost his best friend. If only I had paid better attention to them..maybe I would have noticed Moomoo was sick a lot earlier before it was too late. I shoulda gave him a better diet and let him have more running time. I really feel like its all my fault and they suffered because of me.

I would really appreciate some support guys. Has anyone gone through something similar?

I’m sorry for your loss. GI stasis symptoms can be very subtle. Thank you for being responsible and giving up your bunnies for their health and well-being. Yes, I also lost a bunny during a few days last summer. She was one of my very first pair of bunnies. It turned out she had a tumor that had been growing for a while. We didn’t see symptoms until the last few days. Then, one day I went to breakfast and, came up again and she was gone. Something that may help, and it helped me, is painting a brick to put over MooMoo’s grave. It helped because it was something he could be remembered by. You could put his name, the date, or anything at all. You could also make a shadow box with some photos and/or some toys. (((Binky free MooMoo)))

This is absolutely and totally NOT your fault. You took care of them to the best of your ability, and GI stasis is something that could happen to any bunny. It is rarely induced by faulty care.  MooMoo was cared for and loved, so don’t blame yourself under any circumstances. Also, a 3 x 12 hallway is certainly not shabby for bunnies! I don’t think your not letting them out had anything to do with the stasis.
