I have a 3 month old male dwarf rabbit and I am currently feeding him manna pro (the red bag) from tractor supply. Is this a healthy food for him? It says that it’s for all rabbit ages. He also gets fresh Timothy hay as well. His poop is normal and I think his pee is too. Although when it dries it turns white. Is this normal?

This pellet falls outside the nutritional recommendations. It is alfalfa-based, which is okay for babies but not appropriate for adults. You will want a good quality timothy-based pellet for when he is an adult (around 6 months).

The white that appears when his urine dries is calcium. That isn’t unusual, especially with alfalfa in the diet.

Can you recommend an appropriate diet that is low cost. I got a 25lb. bag of manna pro for $10.

I agree with LBJ. Mannapro is more of a livestock pellet and falls outside of what is recommended for pet rabbits.

Prices of pellets will vary based on your location but here are some brands/lines that fit within recommendations:
Oxbow Essentials Adult, Oxbow BeneTera, Kaytee Timothy Complete Adult, Kaytee Forti-Diet Pro Health Adult (only the pro-health version), Sweet Meadow Timothy Pellets, Zupreem Timothy Naturals, and Zupreem Nature’s Promise.

These fall a little outside of the recommendations but are still good:
Oxbow Natural Science, American Pet Diner Timmy Rabbit, Purina Fiber3 Rabbit Chow, and Sherwood Maintenance.

How old is your bunny? At 6-7 months pellets are reduced and become a very small part of a rabbits overall die so even a more expensive brand should last you a while and could be pretty cost effective.

Yes, if you have only the one rabbit, the pellets will go bad before you use up 25 pounds.

I use Oxbow Adult pellets and you can get 10 pounds for less than $20. Those last a long time with one rabbit, so the cost is minimal.

Since your bun is a dwarf rabbit, he’ll be getting AT MOST 1/8 cup of pellets per day from about 6 months on. If my math is correct, one 10 pound bag of Oxbow should last you 5+ months.

Have you began introducing fresh greens yet? Veggies (and hay) are the most important part of your bun’s diet and veggies should be introduced at 3 months old.

Since your rabbit is only 3 months old, Oxbow Essentials Young Rabbit Food would be a good choice. Then you could transition him to Oxbow Essentials Adult Rabbit Food when he is close to 1 year old. The Oxbow Natural Science food only comes in adult formula, and it’s not recommended for growing rabbits, but it could be fed when your rabbit is a year old. I’m not sure if the Oxbow Organic Rabbit food is suitable for young rabbits or not. The Oxbow website only has amounts listed for it for adult rabbits.

Thank you all for your input. He will most likely stay on the manna pro until I use up the bag or he is old enough to eat timothy hay pellets and then will be switching to Oxbow adult rabbit food. The manna pro hasn’t ‘t spoiled yet and he is a little over half way through the bag, but it stays inside in the air conditioning so thats probably why. Also he’s just now 5 months old and has not yet been started on veggies, other than the occasional handful of dandelion leaves or such. He does however have access to timothy hay at all times.
