        Hi all,

Noah was neutered in April, and he’s been doing really well since.  Bounced back from the surgery pretty quickly actually.  His litter training habits are and always have been good.  I’ve had him litter trained since probably January.  Now all of a sudden he decides he wants to urinate in the corner on the other side of his litter box! He’s using the box too, but I find that when I lock him up at night he decides to go in this other corner.  I’m not sure if its because he’s trying to rebel against me for locking him up, or what the case may be.  I read somewhere that this can happen after neutering, however as I said he hasn’t forgotten “how to” use his litter box, he just does this randomly, but usually I’ll find it after I let him out in the morning.  I also read somewhere about a vinegar solution to clean the pee with, and that for whatever reason they tend to stay away from the spot used with the vinegar – is this true? If so, can someone tell me what exactly the solution is made of (how many parts water to how much vinegar) and if not, just some general advice please?

I’m not sure of the concentration. The theory behind it is that they can no longer smell the urine and are less likely to pee there again, not that they stay away. I would clean it up, then just put a second box in that corner if that’s where he’s decided to go.

Maybe he just prefers to pee in that corner. Try moving his litter box there or adding a second box.
The vinegar water solution is typically one part vinegar, one part water, but it doesn’t matter a ton.

As LEL says, the vinegar water solution isn’t complicated and doesn’t need to be exact. I just partially fill the squirt bottle with white vinegar then fill the rest of the way with water. Adding the water mostly just makes it easier and more pleasant to use than straight vinegar would be.

I tried using straight white vinegar and it barely even cleaned the stain, and that night he ended up peeing there anyway :\ he’s always gravitated to the other spot, but I tried moving his box to this new corner.. hopefully it works!

When he pees outside the litterbox, what is he peeing on?

Just adding on to JR’s thought, any soft material on the floor could confuse him and make him pee there because he thinks it’s a litter box. Make sure his whole cage is just solid floor if you are having issues with litter training.
