Found Mr. Buggs in the yard yesterday. I do not know what kind rabbit he is.  Any info on him would be great. We’ve checked with animal control for lost pets and around the neighborhood.  Very friendly and loves to cuddle.

He’s cute – I say he’s a Californian. Are you planning on keeping him? Californians are extremely friendly and easy going rabbits in my experience.

I’m getting attached already, but I don’t think we can. We also have a lab, Abby, she is 112 lbs and is 11 years old. She has severe allergies and a cancer survivor(yeah TX A&M) . We have our hands full with her. I’m not concerned for Mr. Buggs around Abby, they’ve already sniffed each other nose to nose and when she is laying down, he hops right by her. However, when she gets up it startles him and he takes off. So I’m sure who ever had him before had other animals, just probably smaller. Unfortunately I know nothing about rabbits. We have fed him celery and strawberries, he doesn’t like broccoli and doesn’t like them whole he prefers them cut up. Mr. Buggs knows what a plate is. He turns his nose up at his saucer of water. Today my husband brought home “Wild Harvest” adult rabbit food, is that an ok brand of food? I don’t how much he should have or how often. He has free run in the back yard, but I brought him in because it feels too hot out. Do I need to be concerned about the heat? I put him in my bedroom, because I can’t bring myself to put him in a kennel. What about fleas and ticks, we use “Pet Amour” for Abby so we don’t treat the yard, do they make it for rabbits? Do rabbits get heartworm? Any info would be great!!! I don’t know how long he is going to be our guest, but I would like for him to be happy.

Yes, it’s way to hot here in Texas for a rabbit to be outside.

I don’t think Wild Harvest is a good choice. Are you in College Station?

You have to be very careful about what type of flea product you use NEVER EVER USE FRONTLINE on rabbits – this will kill him. They do not get heartworm.

He probably just needs to get used to Abby – he is probably just in sensory overload.

Oxbow is a good brand of pellets. They sell that at PetSmart. Kaytee is not as good as Oxbow, but it would still be a good choice. You can get Kaytee at PetSmart or Petco, or maybe some discount stores. You need to choose pellets that don’t have any colored bits or seeds mixed in with them – you want pellets only.

Some good veggies to give the rabbit are romaine lettuce, green or red leaf lettuce, parsley, cilantro, and kale. Fruit should be given sparingly, but apple or pear would be good ones to try.

Even if you have a fenced yard, it’s not good to let the rabbit run loose in it. They can dig out under fences and predators can climb over or fly in to attack them. The rabbit could also pick up fleas or ticks or get worms if it eats vegetation where other animals have gone to the bathroom, so it’s much better to keep it inside, even if it has to be in a kennel. Hopefully, the kennel is large enough so that it can hop around.

Hay is the base of a rabbit’s diet, so the best thing you can feed him is good quality hay, he should have hay available 24/7.

I must say he’s extremely cute! I have two found rabbits myself. They’ve both learned to get along with my German Shepherd dog. It didn’t take either of them them long. (The rabbits don’t get along with each other though, but that’s another story).

We live in Farmers Branch. Animal Control gave us information for the North Texas Rabbit Sanctuary, however they at full capacity. I drove around the neighborhood again with no luck finding the owners.  Its against city ordinance to post flyers on poles, they have people who drive by and remove them, so I know I will not have any luck there either.

Thank you for the suggestions on brands of foods. He is now out of our bedroom and has decided our guest bedroom is where he wants to be. I peeked in and he was sprawled on the floor, but I also woke him up and he didn’t seem to appreciate it too much.

U are doing good by him; I bet someone loved him once then dumped him. That happens to buns a lot. Good luck! Lucky bunny!

Yes…Heat is a big concern, they can go into heat stroke in temps of excess of 27C/80F… Frozen bottles of water give them something cool to rest on also tiles. Revolution Puppy and Kitten in the pink and white pack is the best flea treatment for rabbits that I have used….
That is a beautiful bun, you might find that he makes a wonderful companion for your lab Abby.

Try putting water into a deeper bowl or crock, they do need fresh water constantly available as well as hay…
