I have an 8ish year old dwarf male bunny who is not neutered. He’s been great with using his litter box all his life. I barely had to train him when he was young. He just used his litter box naturally. However, he recently went through GI stasis and ever since then he doesn’t use his litter box.

We also have a black lab, who Oliver is obsessed with. He’ll chase him around the apartment, and any time Bill (the dog) tries to sit down or lay down, Oliver will spray urine in his face. He also just poops and pees wherever he is standing rather than going to his litter box.

I have him confined to a small space now, with multiple different bathroom options (including a soft pillow area, in case he’s having trouble jumping in the boxes). I have hay in the litter boxes, and any time he goes to the bathroom, I clean it up and put the paper towel in the litter box, so he can smell his scent in it.

But he’s just using the boxes as a hay snacking place. He doesn’t seem to have any trouble getting in them, because he’ll hop right in, snack on hay, hop out and pee on the carpet.

How can I re-litter train him and stop his spraying behavior? I hate  blocking him off in a small area, because he loves to run around the apartment. But he’s making a huge mess of my carpet!

Since the stasis has he had an exam by the vet including bloodwork?

Rabbits this age can have many problems that keep them from using the litter box including arthritis or possible urinary problems like bladder sludge or stones.

I’ve never had an unneutered rabbit so I’m not sure if it is behavioral related – if so, then you just have to start from scratch on the litter training and do some retraining.

Yes he’s had a full blood workup and x-rays. He’s in great health. He has some minor arthritis in his back which he’s on painkillers for.

He may want to go in his litter box, but it is uncomfortable for him to jump in because of the arthritis. You could try to cut out the front to make it easier for him.
