Hey all, forgive me if this is in the wrong section.

I own a male intact New Zealand white named Valentino. I don’t know how old he is, but i’ve had him for almost three years now.

Recently, I set a cardboard box in his cage that he loved. Well, he loved it so much he urinated all over the thing but none the less continued to sleep in it. After a while I couldn’t handle the smell of bunny pee and got rid of his favorite little box. I noticed he has some urine on the outside of his legs. Could it have been from laying in the box?
The fur is all twisted and clumped. Immediately upon noticing this, I ran a warm bath and tried to scrub out what I could with some bunny brand shampoo. The skin is redder than the rest of his body, but thankfully no sores or anything more than irritation. Now marks two days later, and the fur is still gross looking and skin red. I’ve been applying vaseline daily in hopes to keep any possible sores that may occur from infection. Still no sores, but his clumpy fur won’t go back to bring fluffy and lovely.

Why did this happen? Could it have been just from the box? And what do I do at this point? I’ve tried a vinegar and water wash too, still no success..
I’m in a bit of a financial rut right now; Just Monday I had to have one of my dogs euthanized and then cremated ($700 right there), so please keep that in mind, I simply can’t afford a big vet bill right now. I myself, if an emergency, will pay what I CAN for him, but am more open to more affordable options need be.

He is on Small World Complete Rabbit Pellets- 1/2 cup daily & Unlimited Timothy Hay.

He is litterbox trained with Yesterday’s News. He also has a towel in his cage for comfort.

IF it makes any difference: He was at the vets in December and diagnosed with anemia, and was on iron supplements for a month. (Even if this was long ago, maybe it could play a factor.)

Also, Would Slippery Elm Tea or Neosporin help?

        Thanks so much,

        -Em and a yucky Valentino.

If he was laying in pee, then the fur could have matted together from being pee soaked and then him rubbing. If it is tiny mats, then there isn’t much you can do short of trimming them off. Otherwise, wait for him to molt and hopefully the affected fur will fall out.

I don’t think I would give him any more baths, or use Vaseline. You don’t want him injecting that stuff. Gently trim and comb out what you can, but I think he should be ok until his next molt.
