Are rabbits safe to travel in a car for long distances?

I need to go back to California from Oregon for a week, about a 9 hour drive, and do not want to leave the bunny with a sitter. Would much rather take him with me. If he has his cage with water and food, air conditioning on in car for the drive, will he be good to go?

I will be in California for a week or two and want to make sure bunny will be safe and healthy traveling like this.

        Looking forward to hearing responses

        best,

        Jen

Sounds fine. Does the bunny have a place to stay in California? Personally I would recommend a sitter, but since you want to take him, the only thing I would add is a place to hide while in the car.

I had to travel with my two bunnies from California to Texas over a period of 2 days and they made it fine. As long as the AC was on and they had hay to nibble on, they should be fine. Maybe keep them under the shade as well. Maybe while you are taking gas breaks or are at a rest stop, you can check on them to make sure they are eating their veggies and hay. Safe travels!

Not to sound rude, but why would you not like to leave them with a sitter? A week is a very short time and the long trips will be very stressful, increasing the chance of illness.

Thanks guys! Cali to Texas is a long way! But I would probably bring my bunnies entire cage so he will have his hay, food, bed, water, and litter box. Maybe he won’t even notice he is going on an adventure?

I am visiting home in California. So he has his cage to stay in.
