Last week I adopted two 6 week old Netherland Dwarf Lionhead Bunnies.  I have a cage big enough for them.  I would like to litter box train them but am unsure with what I have read how to do this in their cage.

I recently learned not to use Pine bedding.  So I will switch.  However, up til now I have used pine on the bottom of their cage AND their litter box.  So when I switch to a new litter, do I still get something to go on the bottom of their cage too?

You don’t want to put any bedding in the bottom of their cage – just litter in the litter box and some hay in the litter box.

Start putting the litter box in the most used corner of the cage – how big is your cage and what is the current set up?

I got the All Living Things Deluxe Rabbit Starter Kit.

Right now they have a litter box in the corner, food on the upper platform, water bottle attached to their cage and hay feeder as well.

Yeah, I’ve seen this cage in person and it’s so small even for a small rabbit to comfortably fit a litter box and all the other items needed for one rabbit much less 2 rabbits….minimum for one rabbit is 4 x 2 feet and that is just the minimum if they have plenty of out time.

I don’t know why they sell these cages for rabbits to be honest – I know your two are young and small but even so, it’s just not going to fit a regular size litter box in it and you want a full size box not a corner box – really for 2 rabbits the bigger the better to help in litter training.

I would suggest you invest in an exercise pen like this:

Yes I was already planning to get an exercise pen.  I found this in my local area:

                http://sacramento.craigslist.org/hsh/4442737218.html

If I were to get a pen which one would you recommend from that listing.

Also, would I keep the cage inside the pen or just the pen itself?

Wow, those are great prices – I think the taller the better – they have those clamps that you can open and close to clean and care for them and let them out to roam and you don’t know if they will be jumpers. I think I would go for the 42 or 48 – if you give them things to climb on you want to make sure the pen is high enough so they cannot jump over too…so that is something to think about as well.

Would I just use the pen as a cage or sit the cage inside the pen?

I would just use the pen as a cage – once you get the cage in there it would take up half the space I think. If you could somehow configure it with the cage that would work, but that would be an issue of space since the cage would need to be against the wall and the pen around it but I’m not sure how you would work that since you could leave a gap that they could jump out of.
