I bought some hay for my rabbit. 10lb of hay and it came on a black plastic bag. I was wondering if the hay would be fine if it remain in the black garbage bag with the top open?

I really don’t know (sorry), but I think if you pierce the plastic all over to let the air flow and let it breath, and make sure it doesn’t get wet or exposed to any damp I reckon it should be ok. Just keep an eye out for mould & mildew (that is nasty for bunny’s) and I can’t see why not? Hopefully other BBer’s who actually know (unlike me, lol!) can correct me if I’m wrong and offer other suggestions. Cheers Kamina.

PS – Just a thought, if your weather conditions are warm/hot watch out for sweat. I know here in Oz when it get’s hot, thing’s can sweat in a plastic bag and attract mildew.

It really does depend on your weather conditions. I have kept hay in plastic bags for about a year and it was fine. If you happen to have a cardboard box lying around you could put it in that instead. AndHenry is right though, you need to make sure it can’t get wet. A plastic storage tub with the lid left off is also nice.

I currently have a bale sitting in half of a cardboard box (that I can’t remember where we got… which bugs me because it is sooo big) with a tarp kind of wrapped around it.
