We share our home with six rescued cats and our 10 year old rescued bunny Giuseppe.  All our pets roam freely through out the house.  I am pretty sure, that Giuseppe is the alpha male, since the cats will readily give up their favorite cuddling spot if Giuseppe nudges them with a gentle head butt.  I have never seen any aggressive behavior between the bunny or any of the cats.  About two years ago, one of our cats (Bob) took a liking to Giuseppe and would regularly groom him.  Soon after, Giuseppe returned the favor.  It is not uncommon to see the two snuggled together.   Sometimes, my feelings get hurt, because, I will be having a special moment patting Giuseppe, and Bob will hop up on our bed.  Almost instantly, Giuseppe will leave me to cuddle with Bob.  If Giuseppe wants to be groomed, he will nudge Bob.  After a few nudges or head butts, Bob will start grooming Giuseppe.

This is so sweet! And what a cute picture. I am envious of everyone whose other pets get along with their bunnies, my cats and dogs are pretty lukewarm toward the rabbits..

I know how it feels to get ditched by your bunny for a cat/dog – bugga! Cheers Yellowdogfish.

To add to the cuteness of the thread, here’s a pic of my bunny Sebastian chin-marking “his” dog, Rosie.  Sebastian also grooms Rosie and then will shove his head under her chin demanding her to groom him.  Rosie usually complies but then Sebastian ends up covered in slobber and looking like he regrets it.

yep… that pic that Andi posted on the bed… pretty much the extent of my dogs and Bumpy’s relationship. Once in a blue moon, Outlaw tries to get Bumpy to play with him, he uses the same tactics that he does when he tries to get Bandit to play. Bumpy just doesn’t understand the language!

I wish my dog got along with my bunnies, the best I can ask for is him sitting on the couch ignoring them while they run around. I can’t chance having my dog Jake be on the floor with him considering he is high prey drive and almost killed a bird just a few days ago so yea

I’m at the other extreme manic – Henry wants to interact and play with the dog’s, they are just ‘over him’! (notice how Sam is facing away from him? Lol!). I’m serious when I say Henry’s favourite is Sam (my 15yo) cause she can’t hear him sneak up on her and can’t see him when he does. If he thought he could ‘groom’ her and get away with actually touching her I reckon Henry would. My biggest worry is when we lose Sam, I wonder how Henry will cope? I know he still has George and Frank (the black and white version of your Outlaw), but they are the first to get up and walk away from him – I worry that Henry is going to be a lonely bun once Sam leaves us?
Good for you kcomstoc for knowing that your dog may not be the right fit for your bun’s. If I had any doubts with my dog’s I would be exactly the same. But once Jake gets older and matures (settles down, lol!) you never know….. don’t ever give up on the idea. Cheers.

PS – The only language/word I want Henry to understand is ‘NO’! Not quite working for me yet…… sigh!

One of my cats and my Peanut had the same relationship. It got to the point that Peanut would rather have Pepper’s (the cat) attention rather than mine. :/

I’ve worried about grief with all my animals, and I’ll tell you how I have “managed” that aspect. I keep 3-4 “dogs” at a time (“dogs” is now including Bumpy) so they all have some form of relationship. They are friends or at the very least, tolerate each other. Then, I purposefully acquire a new puppy when my oldest current dog is around 11 or 12. First, I find puppies much easier to train with having a trained mature dog to mimic. Second, the older dog is able to “teach” the pup all the ways of living around here, what noises to listen for… you know, the old-timer teaching the youngun everything they need to know, so when they aren’t around anymore the family will still be in good hands. Lastly, I think it brings a peace of mind to them as they are preparing to die. “I’ve done my job, the new pup knows what to do, I can rest now.”

With that being said, I don’t think I will get a second rabbit until after Bumpy is gone. New puppy not due to arrive here for at least another 5 yrs!

So Andi, you now know that you just need a new puppy for Henry to bond with so he has a buddy to soothe the grief of losing his Sam. Damn rabbits ruling our lives.
