I know this is BinkBUNNY, but our buns aren’t necessarily the only furry friends we share our lives with.

Our home, for example, we share it with three buns, three cats and three ferrets (also a number of fish
Two of my ferrets, though, my two ladies Shovel and Shush, are very old and heavily medicated for a number of things such as acute heart failure, adrenal disease and so on…

Shush has taken a turn for the worse tonight. quite rapidly gone downhill.
She seems to have lost nearly all bowel control, she can’t keep any food down (Including the special food we put together for her) and she is just so weak…
Unfortunately, her and her sister at now at the age where them just not waking up tomorrow would be relatively normal. There isn’t anything left to do for them except keep them comfortable and happy.

She is just wanting to sleep now and I can feel in the pit of my stomach that when I let her get settled in her bed earlier, I was saying goodbye.

        It’s been a very happy eight years…

I am sorry to hear this. I know things like this aren’t easy to deal with. You can be happy knowing you had 8 happy years together. Hold onto those happy memories when you are feeling sad think of a good memory. You are in my thoughts.

            I’m so sorry.

Just before reading this I was posting in chat remembering my own ferrets.  I had four of them… Three of them looked just like yours.

They have such big personalities and easily capture ones heart.  Such great companions.  I really feel for you.  I know how hard it is to let go.  Especially because they do become such a big part of our lives. I know it’s hard, and I wish an easy transition for you and your little one. *big hugs*

It’s just so stressfull… Everything seems to happen at once…

Last year, we lost a bun to a series of cysts or similar the week after we got married, and now we have another bun who is booked in to have an eye removed on Tuesday following MONTHS of treatment following a flair up of what we all believed to be E. Cuniculi, and this is the last week of the University year, too…
And on top of it, this turn that Shush has taken…

Currently very restless, really want to keep checking on her, but, at the same time, terrified of what I’m going to find… But, so torn, because, I know that, the age and condition she’s in, just passing in her sleep is the best, least stressful way for her go… Quietly and with as much dignity as possible…

There are certain BBers that I make a point of watching for their posts and you are one I always watch for. You are such a compassionate person and it is evident from your posts that all of your babies have the best lives possible because they have you. I’m sure that Shush knows how much you have loved her. I’m so so sorry you are going through this. Rest peacefully Shush.

Can’t recall if I actually slept last night… Ended up getting up about eight times and checking on her, and this morning, she seems a little brighter eyes than she did yesterday, but she is clearly struggling somewhat. He legs are weak and she couldn’t keep her self upright while looking at me… And, about 10 seconds after she got up, she was looking for somewhere to snooze again.

Going to contact the vet come 9am.

I hope your babies continue to be happy and comfortable in their time with you.
You clearly love them very much.

I just gave the two ladies their usual heart meds, and Shush genuinely seemed a lot better… She was only out for about 2 minutes, then went straight back to bed, but she seems to be walking almost normally and she didn’t vomit like she was last night…

                          Still worried about her, though…

Seems last night might have just been a funny turn…
Think I’ll likely be seeing a few of these for the next little while…

The few moments she was awake for lunch.

Unfortunately, she seems worse again today.
I can’t get her to eat anything, she won’t take ferretone or treats, I can’t even get her heart meds into her…

Have a vet appointment for this afternoon… …

Typically, she perked up as soon as I got to the vets.

                                    Still not eating.
She has some discomfort in her gut and a blood test shows she has a very high white blood cell count.

She was given an anti-inflammatory injection and I have to give her anti-biotics ontop of all her usual heart meds.
Also I need to syringe feed her 4-5 times a day until she’s back on her feet.

The vet was very hopeful, but, because of her age, if it’s something serious that the anti-biotics won’t clear up, there might not be much more we can do.

Be interesting on what affect anti-inflamm has. Sometimes it’s magic!

Are you able to give some of the meds together?
When I was nursing Maple (bunny) thru head tilt, I was handling her multiple times. You’d be familiar with that from your medicating routine with Link! I had just wanted to make sure she had food before pain meds and didnt want give antibiotics same time as wormer. I was probably over thinking it. I remember mentioning that to vet how often i was handing her and she said she just would have given everything in one syringe. Feed and all.
I was always cautious about mixing stuff though…

So cool to see the 3 buzzing around at home. I’m going to have to watch some more ferret vids on you tube I think! I’ve not seen any ferrets in person but they’ve become a popular pet here. Sadly, I’m seeing more ferret rescues spring up also. Good that there are rescues but sad that there’s a need for it when the novelty of having an animal wears off.

Lets hope for the best. Animals can be surprisingly resilient, even the older ill ones.

We have a 12 year-old black lab who we just knew was not going to make it through winter last year. It was so bad that I got to the point where I made my husband go downstairs first each morning so I wouldn’t be the one to find she had passed. Here we are, a year later, and she’s acting like a 70 lb puppy, running around the backyard looking for imaginary enemies (my husband calls it doing her “perimeter patrol”). Not bad for an 84 year-old woman. Sometimes they surprise us.

                                        Hoping Shush surprises you . . .

Hey Jersygirl, honestly, today, you wouldn’t know how ill she has been. she’s only had three doses of the anti-biotic but she’s consistently improved since the anti-inflammatory injection, so much so that this morning, I didn’t even need to syringe feed her, I had the cup of food and syringe ready, but she just threw herself into the cup and started lapping it up!

As for the meds, I actually mix them somewhat. The three heart meds they’re on get mixed with a little Oxbow Carnivore Care and a little blob of banana and rice baby food and they love it, I’ve started mixing her anti-biotics the same, just in a separate splodge.

Also, I grabbed another video of her this morning after her meds.

                                          https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCyDSSjzx9hzz2exRG6XxNTA/videos

There are only a couple of ferret clips, but mostly bun. (I’ve only recently bothered actually using my YouTube account.

JackRabbit: We had a lab/rottie cross, Tara, when I was younger, she was about 18months older than myself and I was eighteen when we finally lost her. They do surprise you sometimes!

We also had a cat that my mother got when she fell pregnant with me, Xerox, Sox for short. I was nearly 20 when we lost him, too. He really was fantastic, I grew up and he was just always there. I’m nearly 30 and it still doesn’t feel right that he’s not here anymore.

But, anyway. Shush has definitely surprised me today, took her meds like a champ, had a little run around. Only lasted about 5 minutes before she went back to bed, but that’s three times how long she lasted yesterday, and she was really bright eyes when I woke her up, and gave me lots of licks on my nose, she hasn’t been able to do that for a few days.

So, fingers crossed. But I know the worst is yet to come, we’re already on borrowed time.

Just had to rush Shush to the emergency, out of hours clinic after I found her collapsed and foaming at the mouth.

They’re going to try to get some fluids in her, but I’ve requested that she’s not to be resuscitated if she crashes over night. Probably the hardest decision I’ve ever had to make…

If anything, they’re more active and are playing more… Bowser, the boy has been a little aggressive since we lost Shush, though… :/
