Hi, I recently bought a carpet from big lots. It’s huge 5′ by 6′ and it’s made of misc fiber as stated. It’s a plush/gerber/loop type of rug in a neutral cream color to it. It’s quite cheap and I was looking for something to lay on my carpet just in case of accidents happening for my lop. I’m afraid it’s not safe or it could potentially be toxic. Any ideas anyone?

How will you clean it when your bunny does have an accident? If he/she isn’t neutered you’re definitely going to have issues. I use linoleum remnants with smaller rugs taped down on it so they aren’t slip sliding all over the place and I can take them outside to clean as needed. If you want to use that rug I would still put plastic or lino under it. Never heard of a toxic rug for buns

I think Megabunny covered it perfectly. If you don’t want your new rug ruined by your bunny I wouldn’t use it in a area that your bun can access it. But if you don’t sorta mind? go for it. I have ugly old carpet in our bedrooms that I’ve been desperate to replace for the last 6 years. Now that we have Henry, and I wouldn’t want a new carpet ruined by chance, I’m guessing I will be tolerating my old crappy carpet for another 10 years + Lol!

Does your rabbit have pee accidents often?

I have something very similar under our xpen set up. It was actually a very large 10×12 foot berber rug we bought at BJs (a wholesale store like Costco). My husband cut it down a little bit to fit into the corner of the bunny room to protect the “real” carpet underneath. Our intention was that we could replace it as needed, but we’ve had it in place for almost 6 years and it’s still in excellent condition. Our rabbits never peed on it, but they are/were always perfect with their litter habits.

The rug itself is safe. There may be a slight chemical smell at first (I think they Scotch guard them or something), but that dissipates soon. Do make sure to keep your buns nails trimmed short so they don’t snag on the loops.

I have the same question as the others – does your bunny have lots of accidents?

If she does, I wouldn’t use the carpet for now, because it can be harder to clean and actually increase accidents (bunnies like to pee on absorbent things). If her litter habits are good, it shouldn’t be a problem – the rug is safe, as Beka said. I use cheap rugs from Bed Bath and Beyond in my bunny room.

Wow, thanks for the replies ! I have had him for only a week now so I can’t truly assess his habits yet. I monitor him playing, but by toxic I mean because they like to burrow so much and eat carpet will it hurt the digestion. Other than that, he doesn’t really have accidents, pretty good potty trained. I thought it’d be nice sectional to have for his play area. Better safe than sorry, you know?

It’s amazing what rabbits eat and live to tell about. As I mentioned, I’ve never heard of a toxic rug for buns. Lots of people have their bunnies free run on them or in their pens. How old is your fellow? If he’s young and not neutered you won’t want him on a carpet
