A friend of mine from Valdosta, GA recently contacted me about a lop-eared bunny that she’s looking to find a home for. He was given to her coworker’s neighbor for Easter, but the neighbor didn’t want to take care of him and was going to just release him into the wild (!!!!!). Luckily, my friend’s coworker saved him, but he doesn’t want to take care of him long-term. My friend messaged me because I’m the only person she knows with a pet rabbit, asking what they could do about the poor thing. I told them to look for no-kill shelters nearby, and call them to ask if they take in rabbits. I told her to make sure that he was fed primarily timothy hay, that he was kept inside, and that he had plenty of fresh water, and I sent her a list of rabbit-safe veggies.

I’d like to prevent him being taken to a shelter if I could, because I know it sometimes takes rabbits ages to be adopted, and that they’re sometimes adopted by people who don’t know what it takes to tend to them properly. If she can’t find anything suitable, I’m going to meet her in Albany and take the bunny in myself, to prevent him from going to a shelter where he will probably end up euthanized. I’m not exactly prepared to take care of two bunnies, and Nyx, despite being fixed, is still anti-social at best, but I at least know what I’m doing and have the proper equipment and food to take care of him until I can find a good home.

(Admin Edited out portion that breaks the rules here)

There’s a picture of him at attached! (This was before I sent info about proper food, btw. And I’m referring to him as male because that’s what my friend’s been doing, but I’m not sure if they really know the sex or not. To be honest, I can’t even really estimate the breed or age.)

This is our forum rule on rehoming rabbits:

Rehoming Rabbits : Our forum cannot be used as a resource to rehome your bunny. The Rescue section is meant for Rescues and Shelters, and Fosters from a Rescue/Shelter only. However, you can ask about how to deal with some of the challenges that are making you consider rehoming. Our main goal will be to find solutions so you can keep your bunny. If you are an individual who may be in a situation where you are not sure what you should do with a challenging situation – moving, new baby, busy schedule, etc, we can help you find solutions in the Q & A Forum.

Craigslist Ads: Please don’t repost or copy and paste, or link to Craigslist ads that are focused on individuals who are looking to rehome their bunnies. If you spot a Craigslist ad that grabs your attention and tugs at your heartstrings, you can always contact the poster and offer up this site as a resource for education.

You are free to suggest to your friend to join to forum to see if there is something we can help her with on keeping her rabbit, but we don’t allow rehoming rabbits on the forum.

            Gosh he is really cute!
Its sad but inevitable to see this happening after Easter isn’t it..

Rabbits Online allow rehoming posts so you could copy/paste this post for there.

Good for you & the others in looking out for this rabbit. I hope you find a happy solution.

If time is ticking and the co-worker needs him gone soon, I would probably just take him in yourself temporarily as a “foster”. Perhaps ask the co-worker for “bunny support” since you will need to provide food, litter, and vet care in the meantime. Also, I am assuming he is not neutered yet, so this would have to be done by you in an effort to make him more adoptable. I would clearly outline that you can take him in, but you do expect some help getting him the care he needs, and definitely have something in writing.

Sarita is right, that this forum can’t be used for re-homing classifieds.  But we can offer guidance on how to screen and find potential adopters through Craigslist or other resources.  Does anyone know if Petfinder allows individual rehoming?
