I wanted to share a tip I discovered yesterday. On Saturday, as I was getting Chloe’s new “room” ready and lining her box with fresh hay, a piece of the hay got stuck under the skin on my finger. It hurt and I couldn’t get it out, so I figured I would wait and see if it would come out on it’s own. The next morning, though, it was red and inflamed–ouch! Suggestions online were to apply glue to the area overnight and then rip it off in the morning… which also sounds painful. I figured I would give it a shot that night if it didn’t come out on it’s own that day.

It was Easter Sunday, and I was preparing various dishes. While scooping some sticky honey out of a jar, a glob dripped off and stuck to my finger. My fiance was being a goof and licked it off  …and… voila! The hay splinter was gone! The honey actually was sticky enough to pull it out from under the skin. (And my fiance hasn’t reported any splintery side effects ).

It feels totally better today. Now I’m going to be using gardening gloves as a precaution when handling hay, but if it happens another time, I will use the “honey trick” again!

I hope someone finds this helpful… Any other tips for getting the hay out?

Ouch! Can’t say I’ve had the pleasure of that, but will give the homey a try if it does!!

I have had those splinters before. I just use something sharp to pierce the first few outer layers of skin though and pull it out like any other splinter. Glad you found a less painful removal method though.

I’ve had that happen and it is truly amazing how much a piece of dried grass can hurt. Mine worked its way out but I wish I’d had something to try (I’m no good at removing splintters in my own hands). That said letting white glue dry on your skin and pealling it off isn’t in anyway painful, and I expect it was regular white arts and craft type glue that was meant. It forms a sort of skin and is easy to remove. We used to try to keep it on as kids, thought the texture was neat and the pealling fun.

One of the glue suggestions I’d found was for Elmer’s glue, but the other was for superglue. I think superglue would hurt! I know it’s a pain to get off when I have spilled some on my skin before.

I love this forum so much – I was JUST, not 5 minutes ago, trying to get a hay splinter out of my finger and was thinking I should come on here and see if anyone has an tips. And lo-and-behold, here’s this thread on the second page.

Going to try the glue trick. If that fails, will try honey.

And I’m going to go grab a pair of gardening gloves to keep by the hay bin from now on.

I have one right now that’s in really deep
I got it when scraping up Hay I had dropped all over the floor by accident.

I put tape over my finger and left it on for a bit then pulled it off the way the splinter came in and it managed to pull it out a bit.

I get splinters from time to time. I will definitely give the honey a try first if I cant get it out on my own. I always have honey on hand.
