Need some suggestions on the easiest way to help wash my bunny’s bottom!
He’s about a year and a half old and I adopted him almost a month ago from the local shelter.
        He is not neutured, yet.
The first few weeks he took good care of keeping clean. As of the recent not so much. I can catch glimpse of matted fur, and I have tried to take a peak below, and I noticed his male members are looking a little irritated I’m assuming from how messy he has become. I have tried to spot clean him with baby wipes but he will not let me get under there. I’m making an appointment tomorrow with a vet to get a physical and check out his area to make sure it’s not infected and then to set up the surgery date to be fixed.
Basically looking for the easiest way to try to clean and relieve his bottom that he won’t protest to.

You may not need to – see what the vet advises. Otherwise take a look at this link for some suggestions:

Fill a clean litterbox with warm water (Don’t use small animal shampoo or soap of any kind) and pick him up. Lower his bum into the water, and use your hand or a small towel to bathe his rear. That is the way they say to on the House Rabit Society website, anyway.

Ha ha. wash when you’re going to shower soon because, well, getting sprayed with that poopy water is nasty. My bun has had poopy butt for months, off and on. You may not want to neuter him until you get this taken care of because I wouldn’t want all that poop piling up on the incision site.

You may have to try and work him over to an all hay or mostly hay diet and it can take weeks, months. Yeah I’m full of good news. There is info out there about working them onto a hay diet until they have 7 days of clean butts, then slowly trying other foods. I never got my bun on straight hay, but largely hay and those hay treats, and she did eventually get better. Then I thought she had another problem and gave her whatever she wanted and now she’s poopy again. Always something with her. I’ll never get her spayed at this rate!

One of my rescue buns Barney has a notoriously bad tummy on and off, and I quickly got used to bathing his little bum! My chosen method was to hold his back end over a wash hand basin, and use cotton wool balls soaked in warm water to dab at the area. Barney was super scrabbly and didn’t like it, but this method was less traumatic for him. I might add that he’s an angora x lionhead so he’s SUPER FLUFFY, which definitely did not help!
                Good luck xx

My Blossom gets grotty bottom quite often, I’ve had it checked out and the final outcome was she is a stress head (which is very true) The hardest part is catching her as she goes wild eyed and takes off at speed in every direction, I have to plan the capture in advance… I use the kitchen sink as it is at a good height so I can maintain control… I fill it up about 2inches with warm water and a little skin soothing wash then sit her in with her front paws on my forearm then use the other hand to wash her bottom… She is remarkably well behaved during the process… Avoiding getting splashed as I lift her out is the next obstacle but I have the towel right next to me or over my shoulder and bundle her straight into it with a piece of towel wadded against the soggy bits… We then have a sit down and a bit of a soothing song whilst I dry her bottom and remove any knots… After that it’s back in the play pen for some tall stories and sympathy from the others..

Blossom is also a French Angora Cross…. She had a butt shave during our recent grooming and that has helped a lot, her daddy Piglet gets a full shave a couple of times a year.

Gracie is a fuzzy lop and my biggest money pit. Shaving does nothing. Daily baths are not getting rid of whatever is staining her fur and she just keeps building up a big disgusting smelly poop that collects hay that she then drags behind her. You’d think I neglect her, as she’s a mess soon after her stomach “goes off”. No way can she have free run of the house. I think her former owner had it right when she said she knew I’d be the right mom for her bun that she couldn’t take care of any more. She said it was because she had fibro., but Gracie would give the healthiest person a run for their money (literally and figuratively) She’s super patient with her baths and grooming, though, as she’s had lots of practice. Had it well under control, then we thought she was dying and started feeding her whatever she would eat and now, $5 or 600 later I’m back to square one!

                        Vet appointment for May 12th.
They said if he doesn’t seem to be in pain and is eating regularly, going to the bathroom normally he should be fine.
I ended up filling my bathtub with just an inch of lukewarm water. No soap/shampoo available to me at the moment.
He hated the water so much but let, me soften his under fur and get most the mess away. Towel dried, then blow dried on low.
He was so mad for a half hour but after that he kept himself cleaner and seemed okay. Hopefully the vet goes well and then he can finally be neutured.
                        Thanks for all the help!
