Yesterday I noticed Asha was not really using her front right foot, so I took her out and felt it. She didn’t pull it away and it felt normal so I figured I would wait and see, as I have had bunnies that do this for a day or so then just stop. However, she is still limping today, and has a lumpy bit on her leg. I am really worried. She will be going to the vet ASAP. I am just wondering hat caused this. She has nothing she could have jumped off of in her cage. I was thinking she tried to climb the bars and maybe fell or got he foot stuck in the bars? When I take her to the vet, what will the vet do? I expect x-rays and pain meds, but if she broke her ankle, will they wrap it/cast it somehow? What if she just sprained it? Will I have to restrict her space? And how will I do that with my bonded trio? Thanks for any advice. So worried about my baby.

no reason for pain meds, you said she didn’t pull away. maybe she stumped her toe 🙂 I do hope it will end up being nothing much. fingerscrossed.

She didn’t pull away yesterday, but today she is a bit. Thanks for the well-wishes.

Oh Amanda! I’m so sorry to hear this – poor baby Asha. I can’t help but think about a ‘bite’ when I read you said it felt a bit lumpy. I doubt it would be a break, I’m sure she’d let you know if it were more serious? I know bun’s hide their pain, but when you know them the way you do I’m sure she would let you know somehow. See if you can pull the hair apart and if its a bit red? The other reason I tend to jump to this conclusion – my dog’s get ant bites all the time, and that’s how I know, they limp and lick at the spot. (and nothing half a bottle of vinegar hasn’t been able to fix, ha ha ha). Does Asha seem to be in pain when your not touching it or she’s not walking? I know your worried, I feel just terrible for you.
If it turns out to be more serious, unless the vet says to restrict her – I wouldn’t. I find (just my experience with Henry – yep, so that mean’s nothing, ha ha ha), that if I try to restrict him it makes him more determined to be naughty and do what I ‘don’t’ want him to do. If you leave her be, she should know her limitations and feel better that she can carry on as per normal. Maybe just removed anything that may exert her from the space. Keep us updated Amanda, and in the meantime I have both you and Asha in my thoughts. Take care. (both of you).

                AH-thanks for the nice thoughts!
I thought a bite too, but the skin/fur is perfect, no blood or anything. It could be a bug bite, but the lump seems to be around the bone, not on the skin. She doesn’t seem to be in too much pain, so I doubt she broke it too, but I just don’t know. Only the vet can say.
I feel like such a bad bun-mom, I don’t even know how it happened!

Don’t feel bad Amanda – my son broke his arm once and I didn’t panic till I saw the bone sticking through the skin (NOW that’s a bad mummy! ha ha ha). And when he fell I think I said something like ‘brush yourself off’? Bloody kids skateboarding!
Ok, well as soon as you get back from the vets make sure you post and let us know – I will be waiting to hear. Tell Asha that Henry and I are thinking of her.

My vet isn’t in until Monday. I have called everywhere, but nobody will even examine her.
So what I am going to do is see if I can get in with a dog and cat vet at my vets office and do some x-rays to see if we can wait till Monday, or if I should take a 5-6 hr drive today. I do want to go to my vet, I completely trust him, but I will go somewhere else if needed.

I think that sounds like a good idea if he is still having problems with his foot….the dog or cat vet that is at your regular vet’s office – I don’t see how they cannot do an x-ray at least. If nothing else they can contact the rabbit vet for advice. Wouldn’t hurt to call them to see if they would do the x-ray.

It depends. My boy was xrayed when he had stasis and it didn’t require sedation. I wouldn’t be super comfortable with a dog or cat vet sedating a rabbit for xrays, but if they can do it without then it should be fine.

It does depend as Elrohwen says. I agree that if they have to be sedated then it would not be a good idea if they don’t have experience.

Do you have any metacam you can give him in the meantime?

Oh cheese! I know I would be worried as hell, but if Asha isn’t acting like she’s in pain or shock, I would try to keep positive.

About 9 years ago, I had a couple of dwarf hamsters. One day I came home and found that one of the boys (about 1.5 y.o.) escaped from his personal cage setup and he was cruising around on the floor, running around like “hey, how’s it going!”, but what was really shocking to me was that he was running around on 3 legs because his back right leg–it literally looked like his little foot was hanging off his leg by only a sliver of skin.

I did take him to his vet but was informed that a splint would be impossible to put on my little dude. The vet did nothing, not even an amputation, which worked out great, because after a month his little foot was back on his little leg, although a bit crooked, and he was back to using all his limbs again! I’ve had female dwarfs that showed a lot of pain to the point of shaking due to ovarian cancer, but he showed no pain, even regularly ran on all his different kinds of hamster wheels and climbed his tubes as always. His foot did not fall off but I’m almost certain he probably would’ve ditched the foot (chewed it off) if there was no hope. Their bones are soft and flexible, I would think that they are similar to our bunnies’ bone structure in that they are very fragile, although I couldn’t find anything online that compared them directly. He lived to about 4.5 years and passed in his sleep as an old hammy with a lot of white/gray in his brown fur and also a slightly hunched back like old people get.

Sorry!  I accidentally posted the above twice, but forgot to include something.  My friend had a dwarf hamster around that same time and her little girl had a huge tumor on her foot!  It would be the size of a beach ball if it was on our feet.  The vet did cut out the tumor, but it kept growing back so her hammy would tear the veiny thing off herself and eat it LOL!  She didn’t show a lot of pain either and lived to an average life span for dwarf hams.

Asha went to the vet today. The dog and cat vet looked at her foot, and while he admitted he knows almost nothing about rabbits, he does not think it is broken (phew) but rather a soft tissue damage issue.
However, while he was palpating her abdomen, he said he thought he felt a mass. I felt it too. He said since he is so ignorant in the field of rabbits, it could simply be a full bladder. I have been given instructions to palpate her stomach everyday, (he showed me how)to feel for any changes. And we will be returning on Monday when the exotics vet is there, and we will do xrays for her foot and the lump as necessary. I do feel my rabbits every week during their weekly health check, but I didn’t palpate their stomachs because I heard you could hurt them if you do it incorrectly. I feel like such a bad mama, I hope it is just her bladder.
On the bright side, Asha is her normal self. <3 that sassy girl

Your the BEST mum! I meant it when I said (posted on another forum) I’d love to be one of your piggy’s and be looked after by you! (What a life!!!!!  My lettuce cut into heart shapes…). How wonderful Asha is back to herself again, cheeky girl making you worry! But that’s what good mummy’s do…… WORRY!

Edit to ADD – The ONLY time I worry about Henry is when I can’t find him! I worry what else has he gotten INTO!

Aww, Thanks Andi! I feel better now!
The cat/dog vet called and said he did research on what the lump could be, and he says it is likely (although he admits he could be horribly wrong) a benign tumor that grows off of kidney tissue, which apparently is quite common in rabbits. The exotics vet is back tomarrow, so we shall see!

At least the dog/cat vet was willing to take a look and it sounds like he was trying hard to find you an answer. Happy to hear she is back to her regular bunny self!
