Noggin started sneezing about a month ago. She did a round of eye drops and enrofloxacin (1mg, twice per day). Today she has a mini (and very cute) sneeze attack and a glop of white snot came out of her nose. I called her vet and he said to try 1mg of chlorpheniramine for a few days and see if that helps – but that I must watch her poops and her hay intake and take her off right away if there are any changes. Otherwise she’ll have to do another round of enrofloxacin.

I love our vet, he’s amazing, but I worry about all the meds. Anyone have any experience with chlorpheniramine?

Do you mean chloremphenicol? I’ve used that in the past – it’s a very good drug for rabbits (not for human consumption though – it was taken off the market for humans as it can cause anemia).

I understand it has a very bitter taste too so hopefully if it is chloremphicol your vet can compound it for you.

Okay, looked up the drug you are talking about and it’s not the same thing. It appears to be an antihistimane and I’ve never used this.

hmm, no that’s not the drug he spelled for me. It’s for allergies. Maybe they’re related?

Just curious-did your vet to a C&S test to determine the meds to be used?

No, I’m not sure what a C&S is though.

                    It’s a culture and sensitivity test – here’s a link explaining it.

I can’t remember if he did a culture originally. I think he’s just assuming, since she already did antibiotics, the next likely culprit is allergies.

Probably the problem with just assuming if those particular antibiotics work :~) but hopefully this allergy medication will work. I’ve heard of people giving their rabbit’s benadryl but I guess I’m just highly suspicious of using benadryl on a rabbit because the stuff makes me so darn sleepy.

The assuming is what worries me too. I just don’t want to mess up her system.
