Hello everyone! My name is Katherine and I have a lovely little bun named Toby (Tobias Funke hehe) that I adopted from the SPCA in December and love him to death. I had been working at our local pet store where we don’t sell animals, we house them for the SPCA to get more visibility, for over a year when Toby came into the store. I immediately fell in love and our family is a little more whole now My friend gave me her old wire indoor cage, it’s about 2×3 feet, and I knew that would be temporary. It opened from the top, and I knew I wanted to eventually get something built where Toby could hop out on his own free will. Right now he lives in an x-pen which is not ideal because it is cloth, until my new housing solution arrives tomorrow. He doesn’t chew on the cloth, but I wanted something a little more permanent.

In three weeks I will be moving into a house with knotty pine pretty much everywhere. Someone in town here makes all sort of things out of the material, so I decided to ask them to build Toby a hutch 2x4feet with drawers underneath for storage of foodies and the like. This is the final project that I’m so excited will arrive tomorrow. It is about 2 feet tall as well. I wanted it to look like a piece of furniture that goes with our house, but I also want Toby’s needs completely at the forefront.

Toby is 3.5 lbs and a year old. Less than a foot when he does his suuuuper stretches. I’d say about 8-10 inches when he is flopped out, but I think that’s on the high end lol.

Anyway the reason I am posting is for recommendations for flooring and covering of the two posts in the back, and the lip on the bottom (the rest of the posts are covered with the mesh stuff). Tonight we were going to go to home depot to get ideas and maybe buy stuff. They have coroplast in stock at our local home depot, in 4×8 feet sections, so I was thinking of buying that for the floor, and using the extra to attach to the lip of the base. We are open to other ideas though. Basically I was thinking coroplast because I could replace it if need be, and to protect the wood.

And I’d also like to say that his house is just for while we are at work. I asked for the door to open from the bottom so that when we are home, the door is open and can be used as a ramp for Toby to be free range when we are home. However, at the moment he is mostly only comfortable on carpet/towels so I was going to put a lot of that in the cage itself, and on the door/ramp, and on our floor for him to feel comfortable

Any other thoughts, questions, comments, concerns? I’ll post another post with an introduction of myself and Toby as well

That is lovely workmanship. Ask the builder if it’s untreated wood – it needs to be to be safe for bunnies, who chew on it. It looks like it’s untreated to me. When you’re at Home Depot, be sure to stick with untreated woods.

Coroplast is strongly recommended as a flooring material, so if you can get some, I would go with that. I’m wondering about his walking up the screen, even as just a ramp. Maybe a slab of coroplast to stick over it when it’s open?
You can also use seagrass mattes, the thin ones, as good flooring. They like to chew it, but it’s healthy, so never any harm done except to make holes in the floor covering.

That is nice! I like the idea of coroplast and then I think I would buy some rugs that you can wash and hang out to dry for over that – I don’t think rabbits like walking on coroplast or anything slick – they don’t have any traction.

You might also consider putting something over the mesh for him to go in and out of the house on his own so his feet don’t get stuck in that and it’s easier – something that is easily removed or stored maybe underneath.

Hello again! So we ended up having a lot of luck so we ended up buying some products today. They had our exact size of coroplast so we bought it. So that’s going to go over the wood. Then we found an indoor/outdoor rug that was actually really nice and soft that is going to be another layer over the coroplast. I can’t find the exact product on home depot Canada’s website, this is the closest one I found online. The one I found was 6×8, not 5×8 but that doesn’t matter because I plan to use it around the lip that I needed to cover, and also over the coroplast, and have a tooon left over. So because I got a big roll, I’m going to cut a piece of it just for the door/ramp so that he can walk down on that, and then just put it in the drawer when it’s not in use. So I think it worked out perfectly And then of course he has all his stuff like his hidey house, his blanket, his water and food dishes, his litter box, his toys, etc to go in.

              Oh and yes it’s untreated

I’ll post another picture when he’s moved in!

So he’s not in his final location (we’re not in the house yet, so he and I are at my parent’s house) and I have yet to cut the piece of rug for the ramp/door but I have put a blanket on it for now. I’ve also replaced his hidey house (pictured, in the largest size they make). Here are pictures! I’ll update again when we’re set up in the new house

He *LOVES* it! He is in and out all the time and binkying like crazy. He likes to go on top of his hidey house and loves to explore outside of his house on his own. He is a *very* happy bunny now that he can hop in and out of his house when he wishes.
