How can I tell the age of my rabbit?

Long story short, I work at a pet store and someone decided to drop a bunny off at our back door. So me and a co-worker decided we would keep her.

She is a calico mini rex, freaking adorable!!! She only weighs 3lbs. We do plan on taking her to the vet soon, as soon as we get the money.

But I was wondering if there is a way to determine the age of her?

At only three pounds, she could be a young teenager, or she could be just a small adult mini rex. Do you know for a fact that she’s a girl? Dewlaps begin to develop anytime between 6 months and a year, so if that is present or beginning to form, that could at least tell you if she’s an adult. Other than that, it’s really hard to know for sure…

Yes she is a female. I checked her several times and looked up videos on how to tell and she looked just like the females. She doesn’t look like she has much of a dewlap. It kinda looks like it’s starting to develop. I will try to post pictures.

The picture isn’t showing up for me…

If she’s just developing a dewlap, I’d estimate her at about 6-7 months. This is also about the age when hormonal behaviors begin in females, so the timing would make sense if the previous owner found herself in over her head and just wanted to get rid of her… This happens often unfortunately.

The vet will give an estimate of her age and will be able to let you know if she’s ready to be spayed yet… But I’m guessing she is mature.

I posted some more pictures. Hopefully you can see them now. Yeah I feel bad for her. She really is a sweet rabbit. But she can get pretty sassy. Most likely she is not spayed, but we will get her spayed.

I am bad at bunny-aging but I just wanted to say she is beautiful and thank you for rescuing her!

She is precious!!! Oh my gosh! Eek! I love mini rexes!

I think I’d actually put her closer to a year maybe? Like I said though, it’s really just a guess.

Her fur looks a bit… Rough. I don’t know if she’s shedding (she may have been kept outdoors and developed a thicker coat), or it could be poor nutrition since you don’t know her history. Within the next couple months with PROPER care, she’s going to look a thousand times better!

Thank you so much for taking her in! She’s a lucky girl to have found you! 🙂

Please keep us posted on how she does!

She could have been an Easter bunny last year… Does your pet shop sell rabbits? Sometimes people will just drop them back off where they were bought previously…

Thank you!!! I don’t understand how someone could have dropped her off. She was left outside of the back door at work. I live in Michigan so it was a cold night and she wasn’t even in a box or anything, just left outside to fend for herself. But she’s doing great now and we love her.

She’s not shedding much right now. Her fur isn’t that bad. She does need a bath soon though. Because she is white and LOVES exploring she has turn somewhat yellowish.

No we don’t. We don’t sell any animals. Which is something I’m very thankful for.

Please do not give her a bath with water unless she is really dirty, I.e. covered in urine or messy poops or mud. White rabbit fur can get rather yellow, I know, I have three pure white rabbit’s. I wouldn’t do more than than wipe her with a damp cloth. If she is turning yellow, I would recommend cleaning the area more often.
