Hi guys, I have an around 4-5 month old lop-eared bunny. He’s not neutered (but I plan to), perfectly litterbox trained aside from the odd poop and has been doing really good. He’s been here since March 2nd and he’s adorable. I let him out to play for a couple hours a day but a lot of the times he’ll flop out beside me and nap (lazy bunny!), though he has done a lot of binkying!

But he’s been ratting his cage (x-pen) more and more now. Sometimes he’ll do it and then dig up his fleece blanket. But when he shakes it, it can be really loud and he does this randomly throughout the day when I’m doing something downstairs but mostly at 3AM, waking me up.

Although it is very annoying I’m really worried about this hurting his teeth because he shakes it pretty hard. How can I stop this?

Maybe more exercise time? I had fostered a bunny and he would rattle the cage day and night then i let him out more often and he stopped.. Someone more experienced will reply but that all i know.

Exercise may or may not help. My Nessie does this too and I’ve just taken to wiring her cage shut at night so she can’t make noise. She still tries to rattle it but gives up quicker when she can’t be loud. It could be an exercise thing if he doesn’t get out a lot but Nessie has done it both on days where she got a short run and on weekends where she’s spent essentially the whole day out. Fresh hay helps quiet her down at bedtime, but again, hay or no hay she sometimes wants to rattle. Another person in the forum suggested putting those flexible plastic cutting boards in the bars. I haven’t tried it myself but you might give it a shot.

He also could be bored. Does he have lots of toys? You can hang some toys on the bars to help deter him from chewing, or you can rub lemon juice or vinegar on the bars.

I let Pippin out for 12-14 hours a day pretty much 90% of the time as I am home when my fiance is at work. As soon as Pip gets put in at night he rattles and rattles the bars of his cage/pen combo in what looks like a mad rage! Then he does it in the morning around the time he knows we get up, so there are no lie ins for us

He has plenty of stuff to eat and chew but the bars are more fun? He even goes in during the day to rattle the bars when he could be anywhere in the house. We tried vinegar but he loved licking it off…

So sadly I don’t have any advice sorry, you can try more run time, can he come downstairs when you are doing stuff there? You can bring his litter box and toys.

Bailey is allowed to have access to the whole apartment all the time, except for the bedroom when we are sleeping. Although, we do sometimes let her in when she sits right at the door when we close it looking super sad. We are suckers for her cute little begging face! But when we’ve travelled to hotels or to stay with family for holidays, she has to be in her pen whenever she can’t be supervised. She’s a chewer, and these places don’t have all of their wires covered up. When she is stuck in her pen, she rattles on the bars like crazy. I think it’s just because she’s upset that she’s locked up in what I call “bunny jail” when she is usually allowed to roam free. Your bun might just be throwing tantrums because he wants out.

My buns chew the ex pen bars often. I don’t think it’s necessarily something that can be stopped, I ink it’s just entertainment for them!
There was a similar post a couple of weeks ago and someone said about blocking off the bars by weaving some cardboard through them so they can’t be chewed, you could try that.
