My recently bonded pair are doing awesome together except for one thing: my female keeps stealing my males salad! I can’t keep her away, and I try to feed him separate, but he doesn’t seem interested in eating if she’s not around. Now, she’s an 8 lb Flemmie and he’s a tiny 3 lb English Spot (who happens to be the dominant one), so she does always receive her 2 plates of salad a nite versus his 1. So, I know she’s not stealing it cuz she’s hungry (well, she’s kinda always hungry) and they eat out of the same pellet bowl, but I don’t know how to keep her away from his dinner. Any suggestions?

I can’t imagine you’ve got any choice but to give the little one time by himself to eat and maybe two smaller salads a day since he won’t be able to fit enough before the big one eats. I often wondered how that would work if I got my giant bonded with my little one and now I know! I bet they are adorable together but sounds like a bit of work to keep him eating enough. I feed my rabbits salad twice a day. Doesn’t sound like others do that. I must be a glutton for extra work. Ha ha

oops. Just retread that he doesn’t like to eat Aline. Wow! Um good luck with that!

I actually had to feed him on my lap last night, which worked out, except for Ms Piggy honking and thumping at us the whole time. She’s very greedy. She even takes food right out of his mouth! Tonite I’ll try putting him and his plate in the cage with hers outside next to him and maybe he will be happy with that. Funny thing is, he doesn’t seem to mind her gluttony!

My female is very bossy about food and my male is very submissive to her. What I do is put two bowls of lettuce plus a bowl of pellets as far away from each other as possible. Ideally, I have something large between the bowls of lettuce, like the Maze Haven, so that one bowl is always out of sight. Then the female can move from bowl to bowl, but the male can always find another spot to eat.

Separating is really the easiest though if you can get it to work. How have you separated them? Could they still see each other? Maybe if he can still see her he’ll feel like eating. I know some people who have built little enclosures with NIC grids (like 1x1x1) and put it over one of the rabbits while it was eating.

Well, I fed him separate on my lap last nite, and today I will be waiting for him to hop into the open cage that they go hang out in, then place his salad in there, closing the door. I’ll put her plate next to the cage so that he can still see her, but she can’t steal his food. Hopefully that will work!
