My little ziggy had a couple bites of clumping corn cob litter. Is there anything I can do to ensure he passes it thru his system? It wasn’t a lot & the clumping isn’t as hard as a clay.

Clean out all his litter trays so you have clean ones to monitor… Keep up lots of fresh hay and water and some leafy greens well soaked… Keep an eye on his litter to make sure he is pooping normally.

Mine ate their kitten toy a while ago… It has a rotating barrel in the middle which was great for digging at to make it spin and the balls inside rattle and the springy bobbles either end were a great source of entertainment. Unfortunately the hard cardboard under the pink plush was too much of a temptation so it got chewed… They are fine… The kitten toy is trashed.

rayray, what are you gonna do with your cheeky Ziggy? LOL! He certainly thinks he is king of the castle and can do whatever he wants, ha hah!
Yer, do as Roberta said and all should be good. As you know Henry has eaten worse and is STILL alive! These silly boys of ours……

And yep Roberta – I gave up on buying toys for Henry ages ago for that reason, ha ha ha….. (back to the toilet rolls!, and he wonders WHY?????).

Does the package say what the clumping agent is?

I think increase his fluids for starters. Either add a bit of juice to water so he goes for it. Or use dilute oral rehydration fluids. Give extra veggies that have high water content.

If you’re going to use a clumping litter, best to use some sort of screen over it so its not accessible.

Hope he’s okay. They sure know how to give use a scare.

The brand is Nature’s Miracle. I knew clumping was not good, but I put it under a layer of shavings. Apparently corn cob is irresistible!
He’s ok, still pooping & acting crazy.
I’m going to buy something else today. Side question… Are all pine pellet litters ok? Or does it need to state “kiln” on the bag?

Pine pellets are fine. Just not the shavings. I use the pellets and I love them.

Got a 20lbs bag for $8! Not sure if that’s a really good price in general, but it was the cheapest I could find. He didn’t like the feel of it at 1st, but I put a bit of hay over top and he’s a happy camper now.

Glad he took to the new litter Beyond the clumping being an issue, corn cob bedding actually has been shown in studies to breed a lot of spores when it gets wet that can cause respiratory infections in animals.

20lbs for $8 is a little high, you can usually find cheaper if you look for Horse Stall Pellets, or even Wood Stove Pellets vs the animal litter. Just make sure it has no accelerant in it. Since you’re in Canada, you could probably find WSP since they are sold in colder areas pretty commonly.

Because its a plant base litter? How processed is corn cob litter?

Jersey – My guess would be because of the high starch content.

Jersey – Depends on the litter. If it is auto-claved (sterilized with heat, basically), the process of making it makes it safer. Many brands do not do that however, which leads to high spore content (700-5440 per g). Bird and small animal owners are recommended to avoid corn cob and walnut shell beddings/litters due to the high presence of aspergillus spores, which can cause respiratory illnesses.

I thought it might be aspergillus.
It does make me wonder about hay.

Hay can get spores if it gets mouldy, to the point of even making humans sick, from damp conditions. I don’t think it’s as big a concern if it’s stored properly though? Probably don’t want to leave wet hay in the litter boxes too long.

I use obxow compressed straw pellets under finely shaved aspen for my buns. The pellets dissolve and absorb the odor quite well surprisingly and aren’t that bad to clean up. absorbs the urine so it doesn’t pool underneath like it can with just regular bedding. maybe take a peek at it and see whatcha think some time?
