So as some of you may know my 7 year old Holland lop; Arla, Revently passed away. Now Austa is all alone by himself and I am unsure of whether or not I should get another rabbit for him to bond too. What are everyones thoughts on this? If it where up to me I would get another friend for him in a heartbeat however my dad isn’t convinced that Austa needs a friend. Austa seems to be doing fine, but I feel he should have a friend since I am pretty busy and cant play with him everyday. My other concern is that since I have had Austa since birth he has always had another bunny to be with. Thoughts?

Honestly, I would not get another rabbit at this point. In your thread about Arla in the Q&A section (in which she passed), you mentioned that you didn’t have money to pursue diagnostic tests/treatment for her. If that’s the case, I worry that if something goes wrong with Austa (who I am assuming is also a senior rabbit) or a new bunny, you would be once again forced to make a difficult decision based on having limited finances. Wait to get a second rabbit until things are more stable for you and continue saving up money for an emergency fund for Austa’s care.

In the meantime, give Austa lots of love and attention.

Yes, I just didnt think it was right to do blood tests and then if we did find out what it was we would have to pay for proceders for that too. i didnt feel it was right for Arla to have to go through that and on top of that she was older. If money were not an issue would you suggest that Austa NEEDS a play mate? The vet also said that it would be a lot for her to go through at her age. Also he said there was a possibility that it was cancer and it that case there would be nothing we could do.

No, Austa doesn’t need a mate to have a happy life with you. :o)

When our lop passed away last summer, we decided against getting another bunny for various reasons, and Meadow has been fine. Give him lots of attention and he should adjust fine.
