        Hi All,

I have been giving my elder bun sub q penicillin injections for almost 10 days, tomorrow is her last day. The abscess is now leaking, I don’t know that is has actually burst, but it smells bad. She seemed to be doing better the first few days after getting meds, and now not so good, and she isn’t eating well. The vet said it would open up, and said I could call in a refill for the penicillin. I don’t know if this is normal, or if I am supposed to just let it leak? I don’t know what in the world I am supposed to do. I am trying to keep everything as clean as I can, but my bunny keeps fussing with the sore. Advice?

I would try to clean it up – rabbits puss is very very thick so you probably wouldn’t be able to squeeze the puss out – It wouldn’t hurt though to speak to your vet about what they would want you to do – maybe they want you to bring her in.

I talked to my vet this morning, she seemed dismayed. She said she is going to refill the antibiotics, and we’ll keep giving to her “forever”. Daphne smells terrible. The abscess is on her underside, behind and under her right leg. Any tips on how I can clean it to make her less smelly and more comfortable? She is cheerier this morning.

Have you done a saline flush to clear out the smelly pus and disinfect? That could be helpful. I don’t have a whole lot of experience with rabbit abscess, just other animals.
