Hello – Our newly adopted bun, Marley, is doing really well over all but in addition to itching and scratching A LOT (ears inside look clean and tidy, no excessive dandruff I can tell) he is also eating his cecals very often (at least I think that’s what he’s doing when he sits there, puts his head down and comes back up chewing). From all my pre-adoption research I know this is normal, but I thought it was something they did late in the night, so I don’t know how much is normal. He also doesn’t necessarily do it in his litter box like he does normal poos).

Thanks in advance for the advice.

Cecals can be produced anytime of the day or night – not sure why exactly they are called night droppings….but they can be produced at any time and the amount varies from rabbit to rabbit. So it’s perfectly normal – don’t worry.

Great, Thanks! I also just read somewhere that dandelion can result in a lot of poo. We did get some dandelion treats from the rescue and he loves them but maybe they contribute to what seems like more than “normal” (I feel crazy saying normal since we’ve had him 3 days).

Well, it’s probably not that she is producing more but just eating less – they only eat what they need…it’s messy but I wouldn’t worry about it.

Yes, “night droppings” is a bit of a misnomer. They can be morning, noon, OR night droppings… :o)

My rabbit doesn’t usually eat her cecals in the litterbox either. It’s really just wherever she is, so they obviously know whether it’s a cecal or a regular poop.

And he’s still so new to you, so just continue to be vigilant. You’ll figure out his “normal” soon!

I thought the same as you regarding the cecals being a ‘night’ thing. Lulu will do her business during the day mostly and almost always out of her box. Of course when she does this I know what she is doing, but the first time my mom saw her stuck her head under her and come up chewing, it lead to an interesting conversation lol. The look on my moms face was priceless

Haha, I bet it was. My parents saw it for the first time on a video call last night and thought it was pretty “interesting” too. Thanks for the info!
