Hello everyone. This is my first post on this forum although I’ve been reading topics here for quite some time now. So I apologize if this topic is maybe in the wrong section.

My rabbit Zero has had pasteurellosis probably since he was born, he was showing signs of it at just 3 months old. It’s an ongoing battle which requires occasional medical attention / antibiotics. He’s been on Enroflxacin (Baytril) since the 5th of this month.  His two week course ends on the 19th. He’s been perfectly fine other than leaving an occasional cecotrope in his cage. I was told this was because the baytril changes the taste or smell of the cecotrope so they occasionally will leave it behind.

        Now to my issue:

About 2 hours ago he left another cecotrope in his cage. This time it was accompanied by three small poops. The small poops are on the left, his normal sized poops are on the right.

I called my vet immediately after it happened because Zero’s had a bout with GI stasis once before so I’m quite familiar with early warning signs. The receptionist told me she would call back after she consulted my vet. During the 10 minutes I was waiting for the call back,  Zero pooped out about 10 of his regular sized poops. I informed the vet of this when he called me back and he said if his poops returned back to normal immediately after I shouldn’t worry about it. Everything else is normal, water consumption, bathroom habits, pellet / hay intake (he’s temporarily off fresh greens for the course of his antibiotics since he has occasional digestive upset from them)

        In closing:

Even though my vet said it was fine, I’m still a bit stressed. Although my rabbit vet came highly recommended from my feline vet I’m starting to question him a little bit. When I started seeing him I checked his credentials for exotics and everything checked out okay. He even sees rabbit from Petco on occasion. But there’s a few things about him that don’t strike me well. Almost 2 years ago Zero was given injectable ampicillin. This was when I first got Zero and I was admittedly very inexperienced with rabbits so I didn’t know the real dangers of this.. He assured me by doing injections there was little fear of killing off the healthy gut flora since they were begin injected. Come to find out, this is what caused his bout with GI stasis. Now here we are almost two years later and he never even suggested a probiotic for Zero’s Baytril course. I’ve already contacted other vets via the HRS website so he’ll be going to one of them from now on.

So, I’m posting here in hopes of some unofficial second opinions.

My vet always suggests giving probitiotics when my buns are on oral antibiotics for any length of time. Bunnies are tummies are so sensitive. I give Benebac. You might be able to get it from a vet’s office or some pet stores sell it.

Well, a probiotic is not always suggested and there is no proof it helps but it does not hurt. Injectible penicillin is actually a rabbit safe medication as well so this is correct.

Rabbit safe antibiotics are safe because they do not upset the gut flora – yes, there may be side effects but this is the case with any medications.

Nevertheless you certainly could do some Benebac – it won’t hurt and it might help.

Ah, good to know the ampicilin is safe as injectable. I’ve read around and heard some pretty conflicting opinions.

Yeah, Zero was on Orbax as well a few years back and my vet also didn’t recommend any probiotics during that course of antibiotic treatment. Those three poops seem to just have been a random thing, was just strange they were accompanying his cecotropes. Since I posted this last night he’s pooped his regular amount like always.

So since these three poops were random and my vet said not to worry then I should be in the clear? Also, should I bother going through with the probiotics at this point since his last dose of baytril is tomorrow afternoon? Which would make it only three remaining doses.

I would just do the 3 remaining doses.

Awesome, thank you Sarita. You and PuffyTail have been a big help.
