Hello all. In the past couple of days I noticed that Pippin had been doing an unusual loud tooth clicking. Not normal for her. She has been eating drinking and using the bathroom normally. In fact has been doing everything to convince me otherwise that anything would be wrong. Anyway I decided to wait and see if the clicking was temporary and checked her teeth today. I’m horrified, her top teeth are brownish, they are always white. What is going on?? Is this tooth decay? I feel like this is why she might be in pain. I have gone through a LOT lately with these 2 rabbits and this is just one more thing. I’m freaking out and need some sound advice! Thank you.

Possible but, if the whole tooth is brownish, then it’s more likely stains form something she is eating. As long as she is otherwise fine, I’d make a point to ask my vet the next time I took her in but, I wouldn’t make a special appointment. At most, I’d call the vet and ask about it but, since nothing else is amiss, I’d let it be and look at her diet until the next vet visit.

She hasn’t had anything brown to eat…except for an overproduction of cecals lately for which i have cut back her greens a bit. She chews on her willow baskets a lot, but I periodically check on her teeth and have never seen them be brown. It could potentially be older age? She’s 8, but then what would account for the loud uncomfortable tooth grinding? My poor angel

Is the clicking constant or every once in a while? She will need to be seen by a vet because if she is in pain, she will need pain meds.

However, if the clicking is only one or two loud clicks every once in a while,  it can be a sign of contentment.

I’d say she’s clicking more often than she’s not. And I’ve never heard this from her before. She has done plenty of happy tooth purring but that is way less audible. We have a vet appt for tomorrow. I’m hoping its nothing serious and something that can be remedied quickly!

Well, I say when in doubt see the vet :~) Rabbit’s teeth do vary in color though from my experience. Let us know what the vet says.

Getting ready for the appointment and wouldn’t you know, Pippin has not done a single tooth click at all today. And she was running bunny 500’s around the living room this morning. What gives? I’d feel bad rescheduling the appt at this point but I do still want to investigate her brown teeth and have her ears checked again since she’s been scratching them a little.

Well the vet looked her over super thoroughly and said that there is nothing visibly wrong with her. Her teeth, ears and tummy were all good. And she asked me if I wanted to get bloodwork done to determine if there was something internal with maybe kidneys or liver. I opted out of that, it would have been around $300 and for her evidently being healthy otherwise I thought it wasn’t immediate but it’s always an option. I was alarmed to find out that my once nearly 8lb girl had dropped to around 5.5lbs. She doesn’t look slimmer and its tough for me to monitor her food intake since she has a cage mate. Gonna try and plump her up!

But I do have a question for all you rabbit savvys: Are there any supplements you recommend I add to her diet now that she’s getting older? Her immune system definitely isn’t what it used to be and she could probably use a little help. Anybody elderly rabbit experienced who could weigh in? Thanks.

Hello, I have a 8 year old dwarf mix (9 in May!) And I just give him papaya tablets from oxbow animal health. They are huge in preventing hairballs. Does Pippin have any arthritis?

Juet as a note, that is a big weight loss! When my bunny lost a bunch if weight, it was because he had a tumor. Not trying to freak you out or anything! But if he loses more, you might want to check for that.

That seems like a significant amount of weight loss to me as well. How old is she?

Teeth do yellow as a rabbit gets older (this happens in humans too bc of increased dentin production).

My first thought was if she might have traumatized them somehow. I don’t know if this is actually possible in rabbits, but in humans, if you hit a tooth hard enough, you can damage the root to the point that it dies. When the blood supply is gone, the tooth can turn yellow/brown bc it’s a “dead tooth”. (This would result in a root canal/crown being necessary bc with no blood supply, the crown of the tooth becomes very fragile.) But again, not sure if this is a possibility in rabbits.

Are her teeth a darker brown or more of a tint? It makes me wonder if there is something wrong with them just because of the drastic weight loss. Lulu lost just one pound during her pasturella outbreak, she normally stays around 4.5-5. With her though I could see her spine and her ribs, it was so scary… I had to up her pellet intake quite abit to get her to gain the weight back.

Pippin just turned 8. She has been a very healthy rabbit, so for that I am incredibly thankful. I considered tumors, and if that’s the case then she is in Gods hands. There is not much I could do there but pray! I can’t think of any instance where her teeth might be traumatized. I mean she does chew on everything though, including her cage bars. The color is a tint, like coffee stained almost. Her weight loss worries me, but because she doesn’t go in for yearly check ups, I only know what she used to weigh compared to now. I have significantly cut back on treats and such in the last couple of years so that may be why she isn’t as much. Every time she’s been weighed in the past year I have failed to remember if she’s in normal ranges. I can feel her spine and hips through her fur, but you cannot see them sticking out, nor does she look like she’s lost a bunch of weight. She’s pretty fluffy. I was wondering if maybe I should add some critical care back to her diet for a bit. It seemed to be a great supplement for her when she was on a month of Panacur.

Thank you guys for your comments. It’s nice to get some insight because my mind is a bit blurry at the moment. Keep Pippin girl in your thoughts and prayers!!

Well guys, Pippin took a bad turn yesterday. I was at work most of the day and when I got back Pippins eye was weepy and a little red. By around 6am this morning when i woke up to get some water, Pippins head had a slight tilt. I was worried about this! But I can be thankful that I didn’t do expensive tests to find out what I pretty much already know now. That’s my silver lining. I called the vet, not for another appt, but to prescribe meds asap. This is Pippins second time with tilt. The last time was last July. She was on a ten day course of Baytril and was dandy after that. Then this January she got something possibly related to this ongoing infection, not tilt but “tumbling/rolling” to a severe extent. It goes back to her ears. There’s something in there causing problems. What will finally kill this infection!!?? This has taken such a toll on me. My nerves are frayed and I am just beyond stressed. Continue to keep Pippin in your thoughts and prayers. We need it now more than ever!!!

Oh no – sending vibes to Pippin.

Have you asked the vet about maybe doing some pen-g shots?

After a lot of money later, the vet sent me home with an eye ointment for the down eye and Baytril drops for the ears. I haven’t yet done that course of treatment, so we’ll see where we end up after this. I also picked up a bag of critical care just so Pippin has that extra boost of nutrition while she’s healing. Because I wasn’t in direct contact with the vet, I didn’t get to ask about the penicillin shots, I basically left it up to her to decide the proper course of treatment. My poor little smudge, she’s such a trooper!

Thank you guys! Today the slight visible tilt is gone, I’ve always seemed to catch it right in the beginning which is wonderful. I started the meds last night, since I have to adhere to a 12 hour schedule with them. Poor Pippin hates those ear drops and has been scratching and shaking her ears like crazy. I hope that means something is working. Her eye looks a lot better today. The strange thing is that her eye became infected BEFORE it was her down eye, which was odd but honestly it was like that sign for me that it could potentially be tilt. She is still tooth clicking. My little baby must be aching somewhere She still has a pretty good appetite though and is using the bathroom normally, although some of it is ending up on the floor. We can go nowhere but UP from here right?

Is she an EC rabbit? Was that determined to be the cause last time?

I’ve still not had her cultured so I’m not entirely sure. The first time I thought it could have been ear mites that then caused an infection. At that time, the oral Baytril along with some ear solution cleared everything up. Can’t this really only be one of two bacterias? I’m just doing the best I can with limited funds. It’s hard because I would probably go to the moon for her if I could!

Pippin has been doing well, but could be doing better. A little less of an appetite and still grinding those teeth. The ear drops started making her ears pink and irritated looking so I’m going to omit them for tonight and tomorrow night aim for getting them deeper into her ear. My poor little one My heart aches for her pain.

Alright so about a week ago the vet and I decided to switch to oral Baytril instead but it had to be called in to a vet pharmacy far away. Overnight Pippin showed signs of ear mites with greyish flaky matter in her ears. I cleaned her ears with cotton balls and olive oil and have been doing that daily. I’ve also been rubbing diatomaceous earth into her ears as well and putting it into her food. Things seem to be going well, but my prescription stands for a year if I decide I need to get it filled. Because this seemed to take a turn from ear infection to mites, I decided at this time the Baytril wasn’t needed. I’m hesitant to use Ivermectin as I’ve seen wonderful results so far with the protocol I’m doing at home. That and Pippin has been on so many antibiotics in the last year I don’t want to overwhelm her little system. Anyway that’s my update!

Many times rabbits with low immune systems will be more prone to mites which is probably why Pippin has contracted mites…she cannot fight them off.
