Our female rabbit recently had four baby bunnies after an accident with our male rabbit (who have both been neutered/fixed since the mishap), and one of the baby bunnies we found with her tail literally completely off of her butt. I wasn’t sure what it was at first, I thought a clump of fur, until I picked it up and noticed it felt different and then I saw this part at the end of it that was bloody. I looked at the rabbit, who was acting completely normal, and took her from the cage. The spot where her tail used to be was a bloody lump….I’m freaking out. I looked up as much as I could on it, and we don’t have any money for a vet as we just neutered and fixed our original rabbits and have rent/insurance/etc…I cleaned the wound with warm water and now there’s no blood, just a bald dark red stump…she’s still acting completely fine.

Is she going to live? How should I care for her and the stump? And how did it HAPPEN? They’re about three and a half weeks old, we just recently started weening the babies off of the mama’s milk, and we haven’t had ANY other rabbits around the babies besides the mom. The mom was out of the babies cage when this happened…did one of the other babies bite it off? Or did she?

Well, you have to be very careful it doesn’t get infection – I’d call the vet and see if you describe as you did above, and tell him/her that the bunny’s not bleeding – but there would need to be some kind of protection, I would think. Also I don’t know if the mother bunny is going to be freaked and think a predator has been around – I’d get some kind of professional advice. Hope it all goes well and heals without incident.

She really does need a vet It could get infected, and needs to be looked at, in case the little stump needs to be removed.

Most times I would say it’s the mum that’s bitten it. Could she have done earlier before she came out? Has she become aggressive or more vocal now that they’re weaning?
Do you have them set up so she can get away from the babies when she needs to?

I agree about at least ringing the clinic for advice.
They might allow a check up also with deferred payment since you’ve just spent a bit there.

The possibilities of how it happened are endless, what is important now is getting her medical attention. Call your vet,, see if you can set up some kind of payment plan. Infection is a danger, and it’s possible the stump needs to be amputated.

This definitely needs medical attention – I would try googling Care Credit (they have excellent payment plans) or trying to set up a payment plan with your vet.

                    Oh my… Poor baby :o(

I agree with the others, this does need to be checked out. The tail will probably need to be removed and I would think the vet would put her on a course of antibiotics as a preventative against infection. A rabbit can live perfectly fine with no tail, so that’s good.

It could have been the mom who bit at the baby, I don’t know that the others babies would be able to do that kind of damage…

I think contacting your vet and explaining what is going on is a good idea. Since you are a current client with them (with the recent spay/neuter), hopefully they can let you do a couple payments if you need to.

CareCredit is another option (and a good idea) since you have multiple bunnies. You would feel more secure knowing you have that available if an emergency comes up.

As others have said its really important she sees a vet – its your responsibility to look after these lovely rabbits. I would even advise speaking to the RSPCA to see if they would help. How would you feel if your finger fell off and no one helped you? Rabbits can’t talk and yes she may be acting OK but the truth of the matter is you don’t know that for sure.
