        Hello all,

Is 409 safe for cleaning my bun’s carriers, litter boxes and dishes? I followed it with vinegar (except for the dishes).

They haven’t had access to the litter boxes and stuff because they are extras.

        Thanks!

Well, general consensus tends to be no, but I suppose those are all things that could be rinsed really well with hot water, so you’re probably fine. Some people find that if they do too good of a job cleaning, their buns forget it’s a litter pan,but I can’t help but give mine a wash.

OK. it’s just because one of my buns is sick, and I only have two carriers for all three of my buns, so I don’t want to expose the other buns to potentially get sick too. I was mostly worried about the dishes…

Best way to sterilize dishes and other hard items from a sick bunny is a ten minute soak in 1 gal. hot water plus 1 cup bleach, then rinse very well under running hot water until you don’t feel any of the slippery feel the bleach will leave. That will kill all of the germs, and you will rinse away all of the bleach. Even if a tine trace were left, it’s less chlorine that is in most municipal water supplies so, won’t hurt the rabbit.

The alternative is a dairy sanitizer that is safe for milking equipment but, that is much more costly and harder to find a retailer that sells it.

Will definitely do the water to sterilize the dishes. Thanks for the idea!

Personally I wouldn’t use it. 409 contains a lot of really harsh chemicals.

If you need to completely sanitize these things, you can use a harsher cleaner (like bleach) but dilute it way down and rinse really really well.

What about white vinegar?  Here’s a link (toward the bottom it lists using white vinegar to disinfect baby toys)
