Well, guys. Gus slipped by me this morning and sneaked upstairs while I was right here at the kitchen table reading about Frodo and Arya. Suddenly he appeared in the other room, so I quickly ran to check behind the TV, which I block off when he’s upstairs and found a chewed wire that disappears down through the floor in one direction and hooks up to something in the back of something.  I have no idea what it all is and hubby’s been exhausted this week and I’ll have to make a nice dinner tonight and find just the right time to tell him. Yeah, right. I still haven’t told him Gus picked up some other piece of equipment and threw it aside…something I was told would ONLY work in that exact spot (antenna?) TV seemed to be working so I didn’t say anything. He just found out about the wallpaper last week .  So I’m blaming BB. Ha ha Not really cuz he will cut me off!!

He’s more than patient with all my buns, and I hope he can squish back there and tape the thingy back together. Naughty bunny. Bad mommy! Wish we could come up with a cosmetic barrier for that area, but it’s not likely to happen.

Uh oh. Apollo chewed through the twisted surround sound wire…and then clean through a laptop cord. Dad found the surround sound one and was so mad…we haven’t told him about the $70 laptop charger we had to replace…better he didn’t know. Eeeep!

Ha ha ha ha Yeah. I’m waiting for him to get hold of my hubby’s laptop charger some day. It’s a work computer! Somehow Gus seems to know to leave that alone, though he’s always got access to it when he’s out…stupid me. It’ll happen one of these days!

It’s totally because he just wants to mess with you because you got published! He’s all “hey you, don’t be writing about me without sharing some of the spotlight, I got needs too…” hahahahaha.

I swear, Smudge does things some times that he KNOWS he’s not supposed to do, yet, just like a cat he won’t stop until I get up and start to move toward him, it’s totally a game. Primadonna.

I guess I got lucky that I impulse bought my rabbit before I had really furnished my apartment… I then managed to get everything that I could that’s bunny-proof at various thrift stores and designed my space around having a rabbit…. I am not quite sure how high the level of bunneh-mindcontrol powers we have over here but I think is getting bad. LOL

My home is about as animal proof as homes get. With rabbits and wolfdog pups about, you learn to prevent chewing, digging and other forms of pet sestruction. Of course the place is generally cluttered looking with all the chew toys about, but, the critters learn quickly to go get one instead of trying to chew chairs, molding and such.

With rabbits, I use a squirt gun with just plain water in it to stop them if they dig or chew at things I don’t want them to, just to get them to stop for a second. Then I take them to a dig box if they were digging at a rug or, give them a safe chew toy if they were chewing a chair or the molding. They learn quickly that to avoid the water, just go to the nearest dig box or go get a nearby chew toy. The trick is having those things close to anywhere the rabbit likes to go, they are not going to go to another room to get a chew or a find a dig box but, if one is within sight, they will go to it.

I bought one of those blue
Spikey rubbery dog chew toys. Hope that’s safe cuz he likes rubber things so much. It’s a start anyway. I’ll get a water bottle though hubby might have too much fun with it

Thanks smudge. I’ll remember that next time I’m famous lol

I wish I could use a dig box with mine, but they insist any dig box is a litter box instead of a toy… :s

I use the vacuum tube wire covers for all the wires my buns have access to. That way, no destroyed wires. Easier than having to replace them and safer for the buns.

Yup most things are covered but if you saw the mess of wires behind my television you would understand my dilemma. I usually just put a blanket over the whole mess when he’s out but…

The vacuum tubes can fit multiple wires inside, covering a home entertainment center shouldn’t be an issue. Might take untangling the wires though. Or you could use a NIC cube setup when he is out.

Hmmm. I guess I don’t really know what you mean by vacuum tubes. I’ve always used those clear tubes that you find in the plumbing section and those are horrendous to get over large amounts of cords. I’ll suggest it to my honey who will likely know what you mean so you don’t have to keep writing back to this feeble mind!! But I’d actually been wondering about the NIC cube thing and i guess I could store it right behind the couch, so that has real merit. But I could use something better for the blue ray that is somewhere separate. Don’t know why it’s not w/ the rest of the stuff. I’m really not in this century yet!! Thanks for all those tips. I’m going to take bits and pieces and figure this thing out once and for all. I don’t want to burn the house down and my friend just told me about a cat that died because it bit a cord. I’d probably get kicked off BB if that happened Noooo!

Ha ha ha ha Megabunny! Truth time? Promise my hubby won’t see this? I have found a few (lots) cords that Henry has chewed and I haven’t told the hubby. I’m happy to wait till either the house burns down or he discovers them (& I’ll just act dumb?). But I did get caught out last weekend, bugga! I thought I had the son’s room blocked so Henry (and sadly the son, doh!) couldn’t get in? Wanted to do some dusting (shock! yes I know!!!!), and stupidly asked him to move the tv, etc., from his chest. The tv was so bad (luckily an old box tv) it got thrown out, and he had to replace two cords. Hubby has yet to find the chewed cords in the loungeroom (so I won’t be asking him to move stuff if I ever get into that room to dust). Oh, and lets not forget the fan that I can’t throw out yet cause it’s still too hot – that I have sneakily wound the cord to cover the chewed bit.
Gee, now that I have admitted to all this (and realised how unsafe my house is), BB members may wanna start a collection plate now for when my house DOES burn down! (but still better than me telling the hubby!). DAM BUNNY!  getting ME into trouble!

Get vacuum tubes (the hose part of vacuums like shop vacs) Or if there is really a huge ton of wires, dryer vet tubing. Either works easily for large numbers of wires and cables but, vacuum hoses come in more color options that dryer vet tubes.

Another option is to get paneling that matches the decor and wall of the areas behind desks and entertainment centers. Paneling and some liquid nails will do the job but, that is pretty well permanently attached to the desk or entertainment center.

http://www.amazon.com/Install-Bay-Split-Loom-Inch/dp/B005V9UU1O/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1394146940&sr=8-3&keywords=wire+protector <— that is what I use. It's split on one side so you just pull it apart and over the wires, you can get it in various sizes so you can fit lots of cables or just a few. Once it's closed, it's a hard plastic barrier to any wire and my buns have never chewed a wire that is protected by it. It's mainly used in cars for stereo wiring.

Chewed power cords are a fire risk and also the buns can get electrocuted if they chew a plugged in wire and touch the wrong part. So, good wire protectors are a must with rabbits.

Why I am ‘surprised’ that Henry is still alive Stickerbunny?!?!? Every cord that Henry chewed was ‘plugged in’! And it is in the 2 rooms we had Henry blocked off from with sheets of timber so high that I trip trying to step over. We now have 2 ‘baby gates’ up with fencing wire threaded through (don’t trust him not to squeeze through – he can be very determined!), but who knew he could ‘climb’ (and I caught him – how I knew) over something I can barely step over? But the damage is done! At least now, as we slowly replace everything, I shouldn’t have to worry in future – yer right?

Holy cow did I need a laugh!!!! I promise I will check into some of those cord protector ideas. This is getting old. AndHenry, you are crazy! At least cover the chewed spots with that electrical tape!! But some chews have been so bad my hubby says the tape won’t do it, even if the product is still working. Turns out it was a speaker wire (good thing we have 3 others) and he will cut/strip/tape it. On top of that, I knocked over a halogen light and blew the bulb while I was checking the wire and now we have to get a new bulb. I apologized profusely and he kindly said it was all stuff we could fix. I was having a really rough night and crying my eyes out about something else, so what could he do?? I can always count on you guys for great ideas and a laugh!

If I ask for electrical tape he’ll know! That would be ‘dobbing’ myself in! (We Aussie’s DON’T dob – especially on ourselves!) LOL!

And lets be honest – if the cords don’t kill him, it will be my cane bed collapsing and squashing him after he has finished eating it!

Just JOKES everyone! Henry is safe now – just having a bit of fun with his naughtiness, otherwise some of us would be in a bunny depressive state all the time. Cheers!

As much mischief as the rabbits.

We have to go get it 1 1/2 hours away and bring it here for a week. I hope I don’t enjoy it too much because sometimes I think I’d like to try a bird.

Canaries are pretty easy to care for. Some things to look out for while bird sitting are chemical fumes (teflon cookware once it reaches a certain temperature can be fatal to birds, bleach, chemical cleaners, heavy perfumes, etc), drafts and any predators that may spook it. I’m sure it’ll be fine.

Birds are pretty high maintenance though, in general. The smaller ones like canaries/finches are easier, but parrots (budgie and up) are kind of like having a 2 year old child that never grows up, loves to make a mess and is very demanding/loud. To have a bird for 10-70 years, you really do have to be a bird person. They go through puberty, they have hormonal flare ups, they can scream and break stuff if they get bored or want something (I say as my bird just threw everything off the top of his cage because I won’t give him millet), if they don’t get enough attention they can become depressed and self-mutilate (I actually know someone who has a lovebird that is on prozac because she won’t stop self-mutilating). And even something as small as a cockatiel can live 30+ years (oldest cockatiel I know is 32 years old), so they are a very long term commitment. I love my bird, but I don’t suggest them as pets for many people. Too many end up in shelters because they aren’t what people expect them to be.

My friend has a Cockatiel named Percy.

He’s VERY sweet and doesn’t make much trouble, unless he see’s strangers. Then he pecks and squeaks! So cute though. When we were video chatting he flew over to my friend and cuddled under his chin. Before Percy I never knew a bird could be so affectionate. But yeah, wouldn’t suggest it to most people because not all birds are like Percy. They are diverse creatures and very complex and difficult to care for. Small things can injure them and it is VERY hard to heal them (And Pricey to find a vet up to the job)

Now, as an adult, I’ve made a close friend at work whose husband coincidentally bought that liquor store…and the parrots from my childhood came with it! Wow!!

Hmm True! Still hoping the canary makes it, though I can’t stand the little cage that it’s in. I tried to encourage a bigger cage when she was first starting this pet thing, but she didn’t listen. Can’t stand animals in small cages

I’m sure the canary will be fine! And yeah small cages are very common with birds and very sad. If they can’t fly around easily it causes the muscles in their bodies to not develop properly. What can you do though if she won’t listen. They have small wing spans, so they can usually at least do flappies (stand in one spot and flap like they are flying) in most cages for exercise.

I know the trouble with getting people to let their animals have more space. Just because, “Oh no, I’ve checked, it’s over the minimum size advised by the (insert local animal-human service name here)” The minimum is called minimum for a reason. Just because you can have NO less, doesn’t mean you can have NO more. The usual minimum is enough room to turn around, eat, and rest. Imagine that life, you can’t walk, can barely stand and can’t stretch. Poor beauties.

I had trouble last summer with someone ‘keeping’ a bunny in said minimum cages. God it was like a hamster cage! >:-(

Also, so this post IS ON TOPIC lol,

BB has distracted me alot.  I would suddenly hear *BANG* whip my head around and see Muffin standing on my bookcase, looking down at my piano music box which is on the ground.  Then he hops down and does a victory binky.  And immediately requires food…

Yeah, I love that word flappies!!!! so appropriate. I, too, have been way too distracted by BB and am trying to wean myself off somewhat because all these critters, a full-time job (kind-of) and a house to keep clean (sort-of) just doesn’t happen too well when I keep getting on-line. But it’s such a fun social outlet. Then there’s the fridge full of food I bought today. Now I have to, like, cook, too. Ok Ok I’m getting off

Tiki has been fairly easy, after the crazy first 10 years! He was originally mine, but when my mom was battling cancer (she will be 10 years cancer free this may!!) he grew so attached to her it’s insane! If she would leave the room he would scream for her until someone came and got him and took him to her. Talk about a mommas boy! When we would let him out, which had to be every day because he wanted to be close to her, he would follow her all over the house. Crazy bird has had his full share of catastrophes too. He has flown into cuboards, windows, mirrors, refrigerator, and even the washer while it was filling up with water. Needless to say he will not take a bath like a normal bird now. He instead has to have a shower. Crazy bird is just as bad as Lulu sometimes! Oh, and he will hiss at Lulu whenever she comes near him just because one day Lulu wanted to say hello and hopped into his cage. Crazy animals, but you gotta love them! Luckily he has calmed down a lot and has become alittle less needy, an we look forward to many more years with him and Lulu

I have a ‘happy’ and a ‘sad’ budgie story to share…..
My mum had a budgie ‘Pepi’ and his cage door was open 24/7. My favourite memory is us having a cuppa at the dining table with this budgie sitting on the edge of her mug (yes, she cooled her coffee first – spoilt budgie, lol!) and this was ALL the time. My mum (she is no longer with me) sitting in her arm chair with Pepi watching tv. It was a relationship that if you didn’t know birds you could never imagine/understand. Then one day, she couldn’t find him? She looked everywhere, she was frantic! She found him, and I got the call….. (sorry bunnylady) mum found him in the washing machine. She thinks he was on the sheets (hanging out with her) and she just picked them up, loaded the machine and pressed start. She was devastated – and I don’t think she ever really got over it? Eventually, she did get another budgie, and even the toilet seat was left closed after that. Gosh, I’m getting sad just writing this….
But he was such a pleasure, an absolute joy – I got my very own budgie ‘Tweetie’ too when I moved out of home. And yep, wherever we were, so was he. The dining room, the lounge, and his favourite spot was the laundry trolley, he used to sit on the handle (with a big pile of poop under him, lol).
He was one of my favourite pets EVER! (Sorry about the sad part – but for anyone who doesn’t know/think (like we did) it’s good to know). And he made me/us very happy! Cheers everyone.

PS – and we always kept their wing (one) clipped. My mum used to come and clip Tweetie’s. They can still fly with their wing clipped, just not far.

Aw, that is sad AndHenry. But even the best parronts have accidents at times and they are just so tiny and so trusting it’s hard to always keep track of them. Mine will sit in my chair real quick when I stand up and trusts me 100% to not sit on him, so he won’t try to move or anything. I once took my foot and put it over him to try to get him to move and he let me pet him with it instead of budging! lol That is why he’s in his cage at night for sleepy time, he’d end up flying on me while I was asleep and getting squished since he wouldn’t even try to move if I rolled over. Plus he has nightmares and they set him off flying all over the place, one time he had one while he was out napping and he gave himself a black eye running into a door. Poor little guy, I have to come in and sit with him and walk the room telling him there are no monsters, everything is OK, until he gets calm enough to go back to bed (who would’ve thought you have to get out of bed at 2-4am to calm a parrot that thinks the monster under the cage are going to get him!).

And yes, forums can be very distracting! I was browsing them earlier and then I heard the door creak … Powder was pushing the living room door back open to come back inside his area. Uhm. They aren’t supposed to be in the living room! But I guess I was too distracted to notice them opening the door to go out there. lol Silly rabbits, I really need to figure out how to secure these doors so they can’t open them any more.

Dry and hard but a LOT smaller and very easy to clean. Nothing a tissue couldn’t pick up off the dining table! I know it sounds super yucky , but really, it isn’t.  Cheers.

They can be wet right after they eat salad, or drink water, but if they are always wet then it means you probably have a sick bird. UNLESS you get a lorikeet, which has a liquid nectar diet, then yes they are wet and kinda gross. However, you can also potty train a parrot, if the droppings bug you and they’ll go back to their cage/playstand if you’ve left them flighted and you can even train them ones to tell you when they need to poop (if they can talk) or to poop on command for easy travel (it’s hard to take a cockatoo or grey to a store with you if they poop all over it).

Tiki seem to usually go in the same area of his cage but then he just goes wherever lol. AndHenry that is soo sad! Luckily when Tiki flew in my mother was right there and whenever he took off I followed him. Its so sad when things like that happen, but I hope your Mom forgave herself…I know I would have a hard time with it. I also had a little parakeet named Tweety and loved him! I was devastated when I came home from school one day and he had passed He was a cutie and very silly bird. He loved taking baths in his water dish and then he would wrap himself up in the paper towels that I laid at the bottom of his cage. Birds are great little pets, and like any animal require love, attention and care, but I find ours have been fairly easy to take care of.

We’re having work done on our living room and my hubby is finally seeing a lot of damage he didn’t know about. I blamed the last rabbit on a lot of it, which is true! I could see it taking only 2 seconds for a little wire. It’s like when mine finds a remote. Two seconds and there’s another button gone. It’s mostly the cable company’s remotes and you can just walk in and hand them the old one and get a new one and they throw it I with all the others. I feel kind-of guilty doing that.but I’ve done it a couple of times
