Hello everyone i’m Erica and i’m a new bunny owner!! Just got my first rabbit today at the shelter and they had NO info on him…no breed or age…nothing! He incredibly sweet and immediately started licking my son and I and sitting in our laps when we got him out of the cage! hes sooooo cute but I was wondering what breed could he be?!?

Welcome Erica! I’m not familiar with very many breeds, so I won’t speculate. Though I think his coloring would be labeled broken harlequin… someone else should respond soon with a better answer.

Did the shelter neuter him? Here most shelters do prior to adoption, unless they are too young to do it. With you saying they had no info on him, I wonder if they didn’t do it. I’m mainly asking because of him being so sweet and licking you so quickly. This is how many teen buns begin to start interacting with you when their hormones are getting stronger. My Bumpy starting with licking, then progressed to circling and lightly nipping at my clothing.

I’m going with mutt. He is super cute, but nothing about him really suggest any particular breed. I sort of vaguely see some harlequin or the vaguest suggestion of dutch markings, but nothing that seems enough to commit to breed wise.

Hi and welcome! What a handsome rabbit. I like his coloring. I didn’t notice you mentioning his name? If you did I am sorry what was his name?

After some research and help from a friend, im starting to think he is a standard tri-color rex mix… its the only breed ive found that had his markings! and hes a BIG BIG boy so i cant imagine hed be a mini rex… ill post more pics hes adorable!

Yes the shelter neutered him back in Jan, I have the paperwork (our shelters give you the vet records with dates of altering and any treatments if there were any) He had been in there since Jan 9! I don’t know how anyone could resist him!! Poor baby doesn’t have a name yet, I really want to wait to see his full personality before naming him… nothing is fitting right now and I just cant think of anything cute/clever… so maybe in a week or two something will just pop into my head and that will be his name!

I have NEVER felt fur as soft as his! Its pretty insane and i wish i could describe how soft it really is!! I have petted many rabbits and none have felt like him… its like hes so soft and smooth that there is no friction so it feels like your petting nothing… if that makes any sense…lol!!

The fur looks too long to be rex, but I guess with a mix you get some new types of fur. lol! He’s so cute! I love the big ears. Reminds me of a Flemish Giant.

Congrats on your new bunny! He is gorgeous. The colouring makes me think Rex but the fur is longer than a Rex so my guess is a Rex/longhaired breed mix.

                                  Welcome to BB!

I just stumbled across information on a breed I was unaware of. The tri-color dutch. It isn’t recognized here in the US.

Your rabbit is quite far from meeting the breed standard, to big, ears too long and marking not perfect, but there are definitely some asspects that match. I wonder if he could be a tri-color dutch crossed with one of the larger breeds.

I don’t see rex. Rex is defined by coat type/texture, not markings.

It looks like a rhinelander mix….look at those ear! He”s going to be a big boy!

Hi Erica, welcome to the forum

He sure is looking handsome! I know what you mean about the fur. I have the same feeling with my bunnies, seems like you’re touching nothing since they’re that soft.

The reason I wasn’t thinking tri color Dutch is because they are supposed to have more of a tortoiseshell pattern not an orange blanket with black spots and the reason I wasn’t thinking (although might have it in him) Rhinelander is because they have orange spots and black spots on their flank area with a stripe down the spine. He def has a orange blanket with tiny black spots and the rex is the only rabbit I’ve found with this specific color marking… His winter coat is shedding out VERY heavily so we’ll see what he looks like this summer… I dont think hes purbred anything… He could be a mutt of a mutt of a mutt, lol I dunno hes a good rabbit and is incredibly sweet so whatever he is I love him, I was just trying to figured out what he might be to guesstimate his age based on weight… Hes already a big boy so if hes upto the breed standard I would guess hes an adult whereas if he wasn’t up to the standard weight id figure he was younger…
