Bilbo is a neutered male and 2 days ago I got my 4 and half month old female bunny spayed. They live together, always cuddle up, share eachother’s food etc. I’ve been advised by the vet to keep Bonnie in the indoor cage for about 10 days or so while she recovers from her spay operation. It’s in their main living area so they can still see/smell eachother and I swap them around so she has some time out and he in. Anyway when I try to mix them Bilbo keeps going for her, and partly I think he is showing his dominance again (although I don’t understand why?) but when he’s chasing after her it is hard to stop him. I think I am going to just have to keep Bonnie caged until the end of next week while her wound heals as I don’t want the over exertion from Bilbo to upset it etc but fear that after the 10 days once I start letting them mix together again that he’s just going to be against her and go for her. Any advice??

If I am recalling correctly, the spay will turn her into a completely “new” bun, as far as her buddy is concerned. At least from what I’ve read in the bonding section. I’m sure others with experience will chime in soon. In the mean time, I would definitely keep them separated at least until she’s healed. Within sight of each other I think is best. You may have to re-bond them, but probably won’t be as difficult as bonding two completely stranger buns.

Currently her normal smell is probably masked by vet smell so given that scent is a big part of a bunny id process Bilbo is probably wondering who this stinky stranger is that looks like his girlfriend. I would definitely continue to keep them separated for a little while and keep soem things aside that aren’t contaminated with vet smell if you have anything so it can be used to help with any rebonding later.
