we are in the planning stage of building our baby a bigger cage as she is quickly our growing her 30×30 cage. and I was wondering if anyone has done river rock for a flooring before? I plan to make her a quilt so its soft for her (she loves her quilts ha) to fit whatever size cage we end up with (looking like 36×48) but I didnt know how I would go about sealing it, I was going to use tile but I want to give her some grip with she trashes eh I mean rearranges her pen. it needs to be cleaned easy but I also want it to look nice because it will sit in my living room and this is a huge piece of furniture not to like lol. I know its easy to find bunny safe paint and stain online now but I didn’t know about this. thanks

I don’t recall reading anyone posting about this specifically, which is why you probably haven’t received a reply yet. I would suggest you do searches in our Habitats Forum for other ideas people have used. Also, if you look in the gallery of photos, you may get some insights to some looks you like.

Oh, re bunny safe paint – I’m really not sure any exists. We recommend building with untreated wood when using wood for habitats. The colors used in bunny safe toys are the only paints or dyes I know of that are considered safe. You might want to contact a creator of some of the hand made colored wood toys to ask them what they use and could recommend you try for staining.

I asked my husband about sealants. I think you are going to have to start first by looking for water-based, even with that, you’re going to have other chemicals in it that may be harmful if your bun digs at it, scrapes it up and ingests it. I can totally visualize what you are trying to do, I’m just not sure a product exists out there like that.

Alternatively, I bet you can find linoleum with the river rock pattern. Let me know if you find something, this would be good to know!

I second the recommendation of linoleum. You can find ones with textures that look like stone tile. With a solid floor you wouldn’t need to worry about sealant. You can attach the lino to a sheet of plywood for stability. This would be easy to wipe down and disinfect as needed. Then you can lay down inexpensive rugs or a blanket that can be thrown in the wash.

I found these really nice peel and stick tiles for sale at my home depot (I regret not getting more because I wish I could switch to this in the three floor condo.) It looks like a very expensive tile, it’s less slippery, and it’s thicker and more sturdy than what I have in the 3 floor home. I’m not sure if you can find it anymore because I think it was eight cents a piece because it was being discontinued BUT if you can find some nice peel and stick tiles, I put mine on a piece of plywood cut to the size I want and drilled holes through that and ziptied it to my cubes.

alright thanks for all the help. I might just go with the peel and stick tiles maybe it just that I hate them because they were layed wrong in my house and its such an issue now haha I just want something for her to have a clean home. I always use blankets for her, well quilts really that I make and wash them every 3 days. when I clean out her pen

on a different note does anyone know how to get her to poop in her litter box? She has gotten the point were she only pees in there but really doent poop in there and its a lot to clean out not just her litter box but her whole cage everyday… we got her at almost 6months old and she wasn’t litter box train so is there something she might just learn or is this something that she just wont pick up on? thanks!!!

I know… We have peel and stick tile in our kitchen (we rent our house) and there are certain areas where the darn things refuse to stick. I agree, it’s a pain! With a rabbit pen tho, you should have more control bc it’s a smaller area…

Regarding the potty issues, I recommend you make a separate thread in the Behavior section. You’ll get more responses about that there. 🙂
