I have a male neutered lop who has always been ridiculously clean and used his litter box but now he won’t! I recently switched his cage and he has started to pee all over. He is also going outside of the cage when I let him out! He has a corner pan in his cage and a cat litter box outside in the room and he keeps on peeing all around my dresser legs and poos everywhere! I tried adding a cat litter box in his cage too but he is using it as a bed. I don’t know what to do! Why is he suddenly being so dirty??? I use yesterday’s news litter and I also added hay in the larger box and nothing is working.

You mentioned that you switched his cage, it could be due to that? Maybe he can’t comprehend where his litter box is?

I haven’t dealt with a situation like this, but I’m guessing that could be the reason. I heard that rabbits sometimes get confused when you switch their cage. I can’t really help you much with that, but keep on training him until he gets it?

Is the new cage bigger or smaller? How big is it? Is it in a new location/are of the house?

Changes his habitat may have instigated some marking behavior. I would keep re-enforcing good habits. Place pee and poo in the litter boxes when he has an accident, restrict space, add more litter boxes if you need too.

He has a bigger cage and it’s in the same area of the house and he has two boxes in his cage and one outside

I’m guessing it is the change also. He’ll go back to his clean habits again. In the meantime, I’d definitely follow MD’s advice, keep putting the poos in the box, soak up the pee with a paper towel and throw that in the box too. Make sure you are cleaning up all urine spots thoroughly! I use 50/50 white vinegar-water mix. If it weren’t for the change in environment, I’d wonder if anything else was going on, like a urinary tract infection, but the timing is just so perfect, it’s more likely he’s throwing a tantrum.
