        Hi,

So I was thinking about showing my rabbit. Do you think the noise would bother her if I did it at the fair or do you think that would not be that good because she is usually in quiet all the time.

         Please answer soon!!!!

Showing is really only for breeders. It helps them determine the suitability of a rabbit as “breeding stock”. If you don’t intend to breed the rabbit there’s not really much benefit to showing. Beyond that, your rabbit will be placed in an area with a lot of other rabbits which puts her at risk of contracting illness and/or disease in a very stressful environment.

I don’t think showing is a great idea for pet bunnies.

It would be 4-H that probaly does not change any thing but there are vets there and they check the bunnys before the show

4-H showing around here usually involved husbandry(breeding) programs. A vet check at the show doesn’t really ensure your pet will not be exposed to parasites and other illness unless they are running tests on every bunny in the show and it would not be realistic to do so.

To me, putting a pet rabbit through a show is just stressful way to expose them to illness with very little benefit. Why do you want to show? If you’re not breeding your bunny and they’re not show quality it’s not likely that you will win. I don’t see how it would be enjoyable? Again, shows are mainly for breeders.

It’s not realistic to expect your pet to make money for it’s own care. I don’t think you make enough through shows to do so even if you did win. They also do not usually allow spayed rabbits to show and spaying is important for a female rabbits health.

If you can’t afford to have a rabbit re-homing is probably the best option. She’s still pretty young so it would probably be easier to re-home her now then when she’s an adult.

I don’t really understand why you suddenly need her to earn money for you? From your other posts it sounds like you were already planning to have her spayed and spending money on her?

I don’t know but showing your bunny is not a good money making plan.

You need to talk to your parents about how you can earn some extra money. Maybe by doing extra chores, ect… If that’s not an option then I would talk to them about re-homing your bunny.

First, noise does tend to scare bunnies that haven’t been raised to it. A bunny in a room with a loud TV will learn to ignore it, and one raised in quiet will be sensitive to any sound near or far. Please know that a bunny’s hearing is 10x better than a human’s. (Those big ears really work!)

I totally agree with MD. I would like to add that if your parents have made this offer in order to get you to sign on for a portion of the responsibility, then the offer of doing more chores is just right. Actually, they may be wanting you to take charge of the bunny’s care, such as daily feeding, supervised exercise, and frequent litter pan cleaning. The bunny has provided you with extra chores that must be done, and if you are willing to do those, you will be responsible for the care of your pet and it won’t fall to your parents. Maybe that’s what they have in mind.

But they are as responsible for the health and well-being of any pet of any underaged child in their household. Since you are not yet an adult (please don’t tell us your age here.) they need to take the lion’s share of the financial expenses – buying the food, going to the vet, setting up the habitat. I hope they will be honest with you about what exactly they expect you to share in that, and if they are not prepared to do that with you or for you, then yes, rehome asap before you and your bunny are bonded. Did they give you the bunny or did you bring it home and surprise them?

Showing rabbits costs a lot of money – there are entry fees and travel to and from the show. I don’t think there is any money to be earned in 4-H shows. They are also very stressful for rabbits and can introduce them to all sorts of diseases they wouldn’t normally be exposed to.

Definitely talk to your parents about things you can do around the house to earn money. Maybe doing more chores will help “pay” for your bunny. Definitely take on all of the care of the bunny yourself, so that your parents don’t end up doing the cleaning and daily care. I agree that as the adults, it is ultimately their responsibility to make sure the bunny has food, shelter, and proper vet care, so ask them to explain exactly how they see the arrangement working out.
