So these are poops I’ve just pulled directly from Apollo’s cage. He used to be very good with the litter box…his habits have deteriorated over the past couple months…pretty much as soon as he hit about 9 months old. He was neutered long before his hormones kicked in, he’s now a year and 4 months old. Anyway, the on the left are normal poops. The ones on the right, are poops I’ve been seeing recently. Any advice or help on what it could be, and solutions? He’s going to the vet for his Calci vac really soon, so I can ask about the poop there if it’s something serious. Thanks in advance!

Apologies that it’s upside down….right – unusual poops. Left – normal ones.

It looks like he’s stepped on them. There is an intestinal malformation in some rabbits that make them produce “cow-dung”-like poop, but that malformation occurs in rabbits with English spot/hotot coloring or rmostly white rabbits with dark black or brown rings around the eyes and black or brown misshapen spots on their back. It’s called cow-pile syndrome. Your bun is the wrong colour for this. If it’s the bun on your profile-pic.

Shape of poop can vary with the diet. Any changes in diet can result in poop that looks abnormal. Then it can go back to looking normal when the stomach has gotten used to the new diet. If your bun seems otherwise healthy I think you can wait until you go to get the calici-shot and ask the vet then. Maybe sb else here thinks differently. My bunny Yohio had weirdly shaped poop when I moved him indoors after he’d been living outside.

Even if a bun is sp/eutered, it will go through a period of “teenagery” – the normal process of emancipation from the care-giver and the development of a adult personality, – so maybe he’ll get better again with his litter-box habits when he’s “found his true self”.

When did you find these poops? Are they stinkier than his normal poops?

Rabbits have two types of poop. Fecal pellets, which are for sure the ones on the right; often hard, round and dry. The second type is cecotropes, or ceco (see-co). These are important as they are packed with nutrients that are essential to a good rabbit’s health; to me, these usually look like the ones you have depicted there on the left (in my rabbit they are larger and wetter). Usually, rabbits are really good at eating these before you notice as they are a tasty treat in the mornings.

However, as the picture is kind of blurry, I want to ask for some more info!

What proportion of food are you feed your rabbit? Dependant on what you are feeding, your rabbit may have trouble passing the ceco as it may be the wrong density due to what he or she is eating.

Do you find that your rabbit often has a poopy butt in the mornings?

                Is your rabbit over weight?

My rabbit also goes through stages of soft fecal pellets if he has an upset tummy. This can happen if he/she not eaten enough of his hay, too many fibrous veggies or too much fruit! (fruits, including carrots and other sweet veggies should be given in extremely limited quantities… like twice a week…)
